Report Resistor

This experiment involves measuring the resistance values of 10 resistors using color codes, calculating tolerances, and comparing to multimeter measurements. Students will determine nominal resistance from color bands, calculate minimum and maximum possible values using tolerances, measure with a multimeter, and record their results in a table. They will also calculate any percentage errors and discuss factors for selecting resistors as well as interpreting color bands and the differences between fixed and variable resistors.

EXPERIMENT NO.

: 2
TITLE : Measurement of Resistor Value
OBJECTIVES : At the end of this experiment, students should be able to

i) Determine the resistance value using color code table

ii) Calculate the tolerance value for given resistor
iii) Measure the resistor value using multimeter

EQUIPMENT LIST :i) Analog Multimeter & Digital Multimeter

ii) Variable DC power supply
ii) Bread board
iv) Wire clips
v) Resistors
vi) Calculator

THEORY:
The resistor is a component that limits the flow of current in a circuit. There is a large selection
of resistor depends on its suitability in the circuit. Resistor can be categorized into two types
which are fixed and variable. The value of the fixed resistor is determined by the color code or
the value printed. Resistor commonly has four bands. Table 1 shows the value of colour band for
a resistor. To calculate and enter the percentage error, we need to use the following formula:

Percentage Error = [(Nominal value– Measured value) / Nominal value] x 100%

Table: Resistor Color Code

Table 1

EXAMPLE :

Resistor value = 56 x 0.1  5%

= 5.6   5%
EXPERIMENT 1-3
Procedures:
1. You are given 10 resistors labeled from R1 to R10.
2. Determine the value of each resistor using the resistor color code table.
3. Calculate the minimum and maximum tolerance values for each resistor.
4. Measure the actual resistance value for each resistor using ohmmeter.
5. Record all your answer in the Table below.

DISCUSSIONS:
1. List FOUR (4) factors when selecting a resistor.
2. The resistance value for resistor can be determined by the four color bands. How do you
interpret the
four color bands?
3. Resistor can be categorized into two types: fixed and variable. Explain it.
4. The comparison between your measurement and theoretical result. Are there any differences?
Why?
State your reason.
