Coefficient of Consolidation

This document discusses the coefficient of consolidation (Cv), which governs the rate of compression in soils. It defines Cv and describes Terzaghi's theory of one-dimensional consolidation. Four laboratory methods to determine Cv are outlined: the logarithm of time method, square root of time method, Su's maximum slope method, and Sivaram and Swamee's computational method. The document also covers time factors, degree of consolidation, and relationships between excess pore pressure, time, and consolidation settlement. Graphs and equations for calculating Cv, time factors, and degree of consolidation are presented.

Coefficient of Consolidation (contd.)

 It is the Factor governing the rate by which compression can

occur in a particular soil.
 When it is required to predict the time rate of settlement of soil
in the field, it is necessary to know the coefficient of
consolidation and the appropriate boundary conditions.
 Coefficient of consolidation can be determined by laboratory test
results. There are four methods to find the coefficient of
consolidation
