Udyog Problem Statment

The document describes a batch distillation process to separate 1000 L of methylene chloride from a 1100 L mixture using a 2000 L stainless steel reactor jacketed by hot water. The summary is required to calculate the time needed to distill the 1000 L of methylene chloride given the reactor's heat transfer area of 3.5 m2, overall heat transfer coefficient of 200 Kcal/m2/°C, methylene chloride's specific heat of 174.5 J/mol K, and a condenser that can fully condense the vapors. The process operates below 25°C and 400-680 mm Hg vacuum.

Description :
1100 L mixture of methylene chloride (1000 L) and reaction mixture (100 L) is
inside a 2000 L stainless steel reactor. You are required to distil methylene
chloride out of the mixture, thereby bringing the initial volume of mixture from
1100 L to 100 L. The process is carried below 25°C and under vacuum (400 – 680
mm of Hg). The feed is heated by the hot water which is in the jacket around the
reactor. The flow rate of water is 4.5m3 per hour and inlet temperature of water
is 40⁰C.

Below are the available resources :

Heat transfer area of the reactor is approx. 3.5 m2.
Overall heat transfer coefficient of Stainless steel reactor and jacket system (U):
200 Kcal/square meter/deg Celsius.
Specific heat of methylene chloride is 174.5 J/mol K.
The condenser which is required to convert vapour generated to liquid is having
sufficient heat transfer area to condense the whole 1000L of methylene chloride.
Assume the values of parameters which is not given above, but you feel is
necessary for solving the question. Please provide justification for it.

To be solved :
Calculate the time required for distillation of 1000 Lts of Methylene chloride by
using existing resources.

Hint:
The stated problem is batch distillation in unsteady state. The main catch is why
the system is in unsteady state.
Also, the problem statement relates to a real time operation confronted in the
Process and Manufacturing Unit of Neuland Labs Ltd.
