The Philippine Earthquake Model is a Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis of the Philippines. It is an
evaluation of the probability of occurrence of a certain earthquake ground motion integrating combined
uncertainties in magnitude, location and intensity measure using Total Probability Theorem. The
Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology produced this site – specific probabilistic seismic
hazard assessment of the Philippines and of Metro Manila so that, with prudence, it may be used as a
basis in promoting adherence to the minimum design requirements in building structures and in
calculating for the design base shear.
Choosing the map of U.P. Campus, Diliman, Quezon City. From the corresponding acceleration map,
the PGA value at this particular point is 0.4g and SA values at periods 0.2sec., 0.5sec., 0.8sec.,
1.0secs., and 3.0secs. are 0.9g, 0.4g, 0.25g, 0.2g and 0.05g respectively. The graph reflects the most
energetic site response at SA (0.2), approximately 0.9g. This value is less than the design seismic
coefficient, 2.5Ca prescribed in the NSCP, which implies safe performance of code – compliant
structures at this particular site. For earthquake safety of structures, the minimum requirement for the
design response must be greater than the maximum site acceleration response. Site acceleration
exceedances at any spectral period may lead to failure of engineered structures and catastrophic
damage to non – engineered structures. Based from the results of this assessment, site – specific
earthquake source parameters, on the source – to – site seismic wave attenuation and on the shear
wave velocity of the upper 30 meters of soil layer underneath the site (Vs30).
