BITS PILANI, GOA CAMPUS, SECOND SEMESTER 2015 ~ 16 ‘TEST — 1: NUMERICAL METHODS FOR CHEMICAL ENGINEERS COURSE CODE: CHE F242 DATE: 23/02/16 TIME: 1HR MAX. MARKS: 30 NOTE: [1] All questions are compulsory. [2] Write the answer in answer-sheet provided. Do not write on question paper. [3] Write the answer in tabular form where ever required. Question 1 (2+4+4=10 Marks) a. On decreasing the step size i. truncation error increases / decreases / remains constant ji. round off error increases / decreases / remains constant. b. Write the output of the following MATLAB code in terms of m,n, s, and aa. What does the program represents? a=[12; 7; 5; 15; 11; 3; 1; 6; 13; 5); [n, m] = size (a) s=0; for i=d:n ©. The displacement (x) of an object with time (t), is measured to estimate the average velocity. Determine the average velocity + error in prediction, if x = 5.14 0.1m, and t= 0.4¢0.1 s, using first order error analysis. Question 2 (10 Marks) The virial equation of state (truncated up to three terms) can be used to predict the molar volume of non-ideal gases. PV Rr 1 eree ty where P = pressure, R = 8.314 J/(mol.K), V = specific volume, T = absolute temperature. Reported values for the virial coefficients of isopropanol vapor at 200 °C are: B = -388 cm3/mol and C =-260000 cm*/mol. You are asked to predict the V for isopropanol vapor at 200°C (473.15 K) and 10 bar (10° Pa) using above virial equation. Since the equation is non-linear in V, apply Newton-Raphson method (two iterations) to estimate the root. Take the initial guess (V°) as the ideal gas molar volume. Calculate the % relative error after every iteration. Present the numbers, rounded off up to two decimal places, Page 1 of 2 Question 3 (20 Marks) Figure below, shows three reactors linked by pipes. As indicated, the rate of transfer of chemicals through each pipe is equal to a flow rate (Q, with units of cubic meters per second) multiplied by the concentration of the reactor from which the flow originates (c, with units of milligrams per cubic meter). If the system is at a steady state, the transfer into each reactor will balance the transfer out {a) Write down the mass-balance equations for all three reactors. (b) Present the system of linear equations (in terms of ci, cy and c3) in Matrix -vector form [AX} = {b}. Solve the three simultaneous linear algebraic equations to calculate the concentration in all three reactors. Use, Gauss-elimination method without pivoting. Take the number rounded off up to 2 decimal place (e.g., take 0.827 ~ 0.83). MARKS: 30 NOTE: [1] All questions are compulsory. [2] Write the answer, correct up to 4 decimal place. Question 1 — Write the correction answer: [1x3 =3 Marks] a. For matrix-inversion the most efficient method is: Gauss Seidel _/ Gauss Jordan/_L-U Decomposition / Gauss Elimination. b. The nth-order polynomial (for given n+1 data points) obtained, from Lagrange interpolation method, will be more/ equally / less accurate, as compared to Newton's interpolation method. ¢. Curve fitting with Quadratic Spline for n+1 data points will have n / 2n / 3n / 4n unknowns to be evaluated. Question 2 [3 +12 = 15 Marks] The following model is used to relate the effect of temperature, T(°C), on biochemical reaction rates, k (per day), iano where kzo and @ are parameters. The experimental data reported, for a reaction, are as following: T(°C) oma 2 | 3 24 30 «| (per day) 0.14 0.20 I 0.31 0.46 [0.69 {a) Transform this equation (model) to linear form. (b) Employ linear regression to estimate kz and 8. Question 3 [24+241+7=12 Marks] Linear algebraic equations can arise in the solution of differential equations. For example, the following differential equation derives from a heat balance for a long, thin rod as shown in fig 1. @T get A(T, -T) =0 where T = temperature (°C), x = distance along the rod (m), h’ = a heat-transfer coefficient between the rod and the ambient air(m””), and T, = the temperature of the surrounding air (°C).
