1.

Do the following exercises using MATLAB

2. Print the screen-shot of MATLAB
3. Submit the hard copy of the assignment by 31st October 5:00 PM.
4. Drop the assignment in the Pigeon hole at N1.2-B3 labelled CH3101 (near the
discussion room N1.2-B3-19)

Q.1 For the process described by the transfer function

𝑦(𝑠) 1
=
𝑢(𝑠) (10𝑠 + 1)(4𝑠 + 1)(𝑠 + 1)(0.2𝑠 + 1)

(a) Find the approximate transfer function of second-order-plus-time-delay form that

describes this process.
(b) Simulate and plot the response y(t) of approximate model and the exact model on
the same graph for a unit step change in input u(t).

Q.2 The process is described by the following transfer function

𝑦(𝑠) 𝐾𝑒 −𝜃𝑠 (1 + 𝛼𝑒 −𝛽𝑠 )

=
𝑢(𝑠) 𝜏𝑠 + 1

𝑚𝑚 𝐻𝑔
The following parameters are available. K = -1 , α = 0.4, β = 45 s, ϴ = 30 s and
𝑚𝑙/ℎ

τ = 40 s. Simulate and plot the response y(t) for a unit step change in input u(t).

Q.3 A process consists of two stirred tanks with input Q and outputs T1 and T2 (see
Figure).

Q Tank 1 T1 Tank 2 T2

To test the hypothesis that the dynamics in each tank are basically first order, a step
change in q is made from 82 to 85 L/min, with output response given in Table below.

t (min) T1 (degree) T2 (degree) t (min) T1 (degree) T2 (degree)

0 10.00 20.00 11 17.80 25.77
1 12.27 20.65 12 17.85 25.84
2 13.89 21.79 13 17.89 25.88
3 15.06 22.83 14 17.92 25.92
4 15.89 23.68 15 17.95 25.94
5 16.49 24.32 16 17.96 25.96
6 16.91 24.79 17 17.97 25.97
7 17.22 25.13 18 17.98 25.98
8 17.44 25.38 19 17.99 25.98
9 17.60 25.55 20 17.99 25.99
10 17.71 25.68 50 18.00 26.00
(a) Find the transfer function T1/Q and T2/T1 assuming both are following the first
order dynamics.
(b) Calculate the model responses to the same step change in Q and plot with the
experimental data.

Q.4 An electronic PID temperature controller is at steady state with an output of 12 mA.
The set point equals the nominal process temperature initially. At t = 0, the set point is
increased at the rate of 0.5 mA/min. If the current settings are 𝐾𝑐 = 2, 𝜏𝐼 =1.5 min,
𝜏𝐷 =0.5 min.
(a) Generate the controller response in Simulink.
(b) Repeat part (a) for a PI controller

Q.5 A control system has the following transfer functions:

1 3
𝐺𝑐 = 𝐾𝑐 , 𝐺𝑣 𝐺𝑝 = , 𝐺𝑚 =
(𝑠+1)(0.5𝑠+1) 𝑠+3

Using Simulation check whether the system is stable for

(a) 𝐾𝑐 = 9

(b) 𝐾𝑐 = 11

(c) 𝐾𝑐 = 13
