Vishay Offers Designers Free Online

MOSFET Thermal Simulation Tool
A web-based tool that gives designers a detailed simulation of how Vishay Siliconix MOSFETs will perform
thermally and be affected by adjacent components in a wide range of applications is available on the web site of
Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE:VSH) at http://www.vishay.com/thermal-modelling.

ThermaSim allows registered users at www.vishay.com to do all of the following:

• Perform detailed thermal simulations for any power MOSFET application
• Define other heat-dissipating components and simulate their effects on the MOSFET’s thermal
behavior
• Customize the design with user specifications
• Designate PCB specifications, define heat sink, solder quality, air flow, ambient temperature,
and more
• Download multiple simulation results into Excel to compare and examine trends
• Save the simulation for later use with quick modifications
• View thermal images and key temperatures and an MPEG video clip of the thermal image with transient
simulation

The Key Benefits:

• Increased simulation accuracy derived from:
• Structurally detailed models created using finite element analysis (FEA), including die active area of
Vishay Siliconix power MOSFETs
• Use of fine meshing within the simulation process and boundary element conductive (FEA)
analysis
• The ability to define other heat-dissipating components and simulate their effect on the MOSFET’s
thermal performance gives designers a complete view of the MOSFET’s thermal environment
• Transient analysis capability to study short-duration high-power events, such as
• Switching transients (turn-on and turn-off)
• UIS

• Load dump scenarios in automotive applications

• Ensures optimum device selection for application requirements

The Key Applications:

• Especially useful for high-current, high-temperature applications such as automotive, fixed telecom,
desktop and laptop computers, and industrial systems.

A Brief Overview of The ThermaSim™ Process

The following section shows some of the major steps in the ThermaSim thermal simulation process. For
complete details, go to www.vishay.com/thermal-modelling.

Step One: Components Selection - Select

the power MOSFET thermal model(s) from the
library and define the power profiles of the
MOSFET and other heat-dissipating
components. The heat sink is also defined in
this step.

Step Two: PCB Definition – Set user

configurations, such as PCB size, material,
and attachment method; component
placement and solder quality; and system
temperature and air flow.

Step Three: System Operating

Environment – Define the simulation as
steady state or transient, set the simulation
accuracy, set output data specifications, and
save the design.

Step Four: Receive Results – Results are

sent by email and can be saved to Excel.
Thermal images are provided, and MPEG
video clips of thermal images are available for
transient analysis.

Step Five: Thermal Analysis -- Download
