I. Introduction
Strength is the ability of the material to resist applied forces without yielding or fracturing. The
strength of a material may vary markedly with respect to the way it is deformed. A material that is
strong and ductile under static load may appear weak and brittle under cyclic or impact stresses.
Materials also show differing strength when the method or the rate of stress application is varied. The
elastic and plastic deformation of the material subjected to an external stress may terminate in an
inhomogeneous form of deformation, termed fracture.
One of the methods used to measure the strength of material is by tensile test. Tensile testing,
also known as tension testing, is a fundamental materials science test in which a sample is subjected to a
controlled tension until failure. The test provides data on the strength and ductility of metals under
uniaxial tensile forces. The results from the tests are commonly used to select material for an
application, for quality control, and to predict how a material will react under normal forces. Properties
that are directly measured via tensile test are ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and
reduction in area.
The most common testing machine used in tensile testing is the Universal Testing Machine
(UTM). A universal testing machine is used to test the tensile stress and compressive strength of
materials. It is named after the fact that it can perform many standard tensile and compression tests on
materials, components and structures. This type of machine has crosshead; one is adjusted for the
length of the specimen and the other is driven to apply tension to the test specimen. The specimen is
placed in the machine between the grips and an extensometer if required can automatically record the
change in gauge length during the test. Once the machine is started it begins to apply an increasing load
on specimen. Throughout the tests the control system and its associated software record the load and
extension or compression of the specimen.
