Getting started with autodesk navisworks

Why Autodesk navisworks is an integral part of overall BIM strategy?


Navis work is a design coordination program not a design creation program, We can create a federated
model, with less request of REQUEST FOR INFORMATION, we can also create 5D construction model,

AUTODESK PRODUCT FLAVOR’S,


1) AUTODESK NAVISWORKS SIMULATE
It’s the base level product, it includes the following modules
 Autodesk rendering
Used to create high quality rendered images
 Animator and scripter
Animations of moving and rotating items rotating doors and cranes
scripter module is used to automate those animations done by animator
 Time liner
Used to create 5D construction simulation
 Quantification
This is used by the estimators to take the quantities of project

2) AUTODESK NAVISWORKS MANAGE

MODULE)

3) AUTODESK NAVISWORKS FREEDOM


It’s a free viewer, it’s generally used to view NWD file, That
are published out of navisworks simulate or manage,it can also open DWF and autodesk RECAP
file.

1. Autodesk navisworks cache file format (NWC)
Automatically created when you open a native file
from consultant
2. Autodesk navisworks file sets(NWF)
Files with live link to the native consultant file
3. Autodesk navisworks document
Frozen in time with no links to native consultant file

Clicking on the home button changes the current view to standard isometric view.

Some are in docked mode while some are in the auto hide mode.

Teacher Deepak maini recommends that you have to create your own workspaces saved it so that you
can you used it whenever you need it.

GLOBAL OPTION
OPENNING THE FIRST FILE
For creating a federated model out of structure architecture models etc first we needed to open the
structure model and then bring in all the services. Architecture file should be opened at the end.
So when you opened a consultant file in a Navisworks by default if that file is coming from autodesk
revit. Navisworks uses the realistic displays style to display the model. It means that it showing the
model based on the realistic material appearances, the problem with that it is bid taxing on your
graphics, so for a machine with less graphics card your Navisworks might struggled.so we have to
change our view style or display style first.

Also change lightning to scene lightning


After right click this window will showed up simply make it to horizon.
To orbit the model hold shift key and click on mouse it will orbit

SAVING THE PROJECT

CREATING AND SAVING THE FEDERATED MODEL.

FEDERATED MODEL:
A single complete model of a building project created by combining all the
consultant files. Generally is saved as NWF file so to have live links with the consultant file, used in the
coordination meeting for the design review and clash detection, at the end DEEPAK MAINI is saying that
we saved it as NWD format and distribute it with consultant to fix the issue before next coordination
meeting, the same federated model can be used to create 5d simulation’s and quantity take offs.
MAKING THE SAME Z-CORDINATES FOR DIFFERENT FILES.
APPENDING:
So what happens is that DEEPAK MAINI first open the structure rvt file in AUTODESK NAVISWORKS, then
he append the HVAC file to it, after that he append electrical and plumbing file to it, he makes the
coordinates of these files as that of structure rvt file, at last he appends the architecture file.
PUBLISHING THE NWD FILE:
SELECTION TREE:
A window that displays the structure of consultant file in various hierarchical views, it is important to
note that the structure is defined by the design application that was used to create the file.

So there are three windows in selection tree they are STANDARD which is the default, COMPACT and the
properties,

THE PROPERTY WINDOW:


A window that displays the smart properties of the object currently selected in the model. The
properties are displayed in various tabs dedicated to the property category.

Important to note that the properties will only be displayed if they were available in the native file.

NAVIGATING THROUGH THE MODEL

NAVIGATION TOOLS:
Navigation tools are model display tools that are zoom pan orbit the model or view the model from
different directions.

STEERING WHEEL:

So the idea is that we don’t have to use the center tools for our pivet point location we can make it from
zoom tool as well, we can use the combination of these tools while looking to our requirement.

<shift +w> key can exit the navigation wheel.

ZOOM AND PAN TOOLS:

ORBIT TOOLS:
If we use FREE ORBIT then the camera will roll and it will results in tilting of the model, so what we have
to do is to have go to view point ribbon tab under the camera ribbon panel make the camera roll option
to zero.
THE LOOK IT TOOLS:
Allow you to select an object, camera then changes and looks at the selected object from the direction
normal to it.

TIPS AND TRICKS TO USE NAVIGATION TOOLS:


When the walk command is active the behavior changes while activating the navigation tools with the
mouse button.
