& Comp - Synthesis Argument Research Project
In small groups (2-4) you will choose and research a controversial topic. The research project will help you in practicing the art of synthesizing multiple arguments into one informed argument. Step 1 - Choose an approved controversial topic which is both interesting and not overused (overused topics include abortion, gay marriage, etc.) - Over the next few weeks you will do research on your topic, compile numerous source texts, and annotate and summarize the arguments from source texts. Your source texts need to include both the pro and con arguments of your controversial topic. Step 2 - Once you have at least three source texts for the con argument of your topic and at least three source texts for the pro argument of your topic you will develop a 1-2 page synthesized outline for the con argument and a 1-2 page synthesized outline for the pro argument Step 3 - You will take your outlines and develop a brief presentation that will take a stand and persuade the classroom of your pro argument - The following week you will develop a brief presentation that will take a stand and persuade your audience of your con argument - Each presentation you will cite (briefly) three sources and five facts as evidence to support your thesis - Your group will provide a handout for the class with your talking points
