OBJECTIVES

Stipulated in the new program is the Work Immersion. The Department of

Education (DepEd) had planned the Work Immersion to enrich the K-12 experience, with

its overall goal being to better prepare senior high school students for their future goals

and careers

One of the goals of the K to 12 Basic Education Program is to develop in learners

the competencies, work ethic, and values relevant to pursuing further education and

joining the world of work. To achieve greater congruence between basic education and

the nation’s development targets. Work immersion a required subject has been

incorporated to the curriculum. This subject will provide learners with opportunities: to

become familiar with the work place for employment situation and to apply their

competencies in areas of specialization in authentic work environment.

To achieve the above objectives, work immersion is thus a requirement for

graduation from secondary education. Learners are immersed in an actual work such as

workshops offices and laboratories in which their prior training is relevant.

The said learning experience that the students can get from it will surely enable

and help students as they familiarize themselves with the workplace simulation and apply

their competencies in their particular areas. The completion of work immersion is a

prerequisite to graduation under the K-12 program.

It aims to hone globally competitive citizens, with its specialized curriculum,

gearing Filipino students for further studies, employment or entrepreneurship. Experience

is considered to be one of life’s greatest teachers. As trainees, we can use it as a

motivation as we gain expertise in our respective fields. This experience will surely help

us not only for our life as students but also our future job as professional employees of

the country.

COMPANY HISTORY

Dr. Pablo O. Torre, Sr. began his medical practice in a family clinic in Bacolod

City. The clinic expanded, later becoming the Riverside General Hospital, and Dr. Torre

invited Carmelite nuns to assist in administering the facility. Four sisters joined the

hospital in 1957 – Mother Superior Margaret Theresa, Sister Regina Javier, Sister Ma.

Isabelle Gregorio and Sister Cristina Dean. Recognizing the need for competent staff to

run the hospital, Dr. Torre established Riverside College, initially offering the School of

Midwifery on June 11, 1961 and the School of Nursing on June 23, 1963.[1] Riverside

General Hospital became a teaching hospital for nurses.

In 1972, the hospital was renamed to Riverside Medical Center. Later, it was

again renamed in memory of its founder, becoming the Dr. Pablo O. Torre Memorial

Hospital, albeit the name of its parent company retained its name as The Riverside

Medical Center, Inc. Riverside College, Inc. has also retained its name in reference to the

hospital's original name.

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED

Work immersion is one of the best training methods since it is well-organized and

conducted in a place where students will become productive and well-developed. It

exposes them to the actual work related to their course. It helps them to learn and

understand more the concept they had discussed in class. But what are the issues and

problems encountered by students doing work immersion?

One of its downside is safety. Since work immersion is done outside the campus,

supervision from teachers is necessary. Less or no supervision at all is risky on the

student’s side and there are cases that the school is not liable to anything that will happen

to the student. This is not just a burden to the parents but to the school as well. Another

one is the variety of results. Though one of the purposes of having immersions is for the

student to develop its abilities and capabilities related to the subject matter, we cannot

deny the fact the development varies from person to person. To some it might be a very

productive immersion but to others, it might be stressful. So constant evaluation and

monitoring is needed.

In the case of the students doing Immersion Program at the Riverside College,

another problem that I could state is the need for a better transportation system. Although

there was a bus provided by Riverside, there were days that we had to rent out public

transport and since there were a lot of us, the hired vehicles were much to tightly packed

to be considered 100% safe.

RECOMMENDATION

There are a lot of recommendations that could be taken from this experience. For

one, better transportation system provision can be discussed with schools or companies

taking students under their wing for Immersion purposes. Also, espcially for the STEM

Strand, there are a lot of other Companies and not just schools that offer Immersion

Program for K-12 students who can expose us to more experience in the type of field that

we wish to pursue. Marine schools, the Ports Authority, GC&C Group of Companies
which even provide for allowances to students who undergo Immersion with them are

just a few to site examples.

LOGO AND MEANING

The school logo is circular with the name of the school, the founding of the

hospital where the school eventually emerged from and the school motto that in English

means Light and Charity, which means the hope for those in need. Since this is a medical

school, the icons of a book for learning and the Caduceus, the twin serpents and a rod

with wings, a symbol of the Greek god Hermes, symbol of medicine, were used in the

logo. The colors of the school, Blue and Golden Yellow were used.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Primarily I would like to thank God for giving me strength and knowledge for my

work immersion. I would like also to express my gratitude to my dear adviser for

supporting and guiding on completing my work immersion. I would like to extend my

gratitude to my parents supported me financially and for encouraging me.

I would also like to give acknowledgement to all the staff, students and faculty

members of Riverside College in the different faculties for the support, the learning and

the guidance that they have given us during our time when we were completing our

Immersion Program hours.

DEDICATION

This work immersion is dedicated to our beloved parents who have been source of

inspiration and gave me strength when I thought of giving up, who continually provide

moral, spiritual and financial support.

To my sibling, friends, teachers and classmate who shared their work of advice

and encouragement.

And lastly, I dedicated this to the Almighty God, thank you for the strength,

power of mind, protection, skills and for giving me healthy life. All of these I offer to

you.
INTRODUCTION

According to beta.philstar.com, the word immersion as it applies to the k to 12

curriculum is defined in the DepEd Order No. 40 series of 2015: “work immersion refers

to the part of the Senior High School Curriculum consisting of 80 hours of hands-on

experience or work simulation which the Grade 11 and 12 students will undergo to

expose them to the actual workplace setting and to enrich the competencies provided by

the school under the supervision of the School Head and the designated personnel of the

partner”. Ramon Torres National High School adapted the K to 12 program of the

DepEd. It has Senior High School students who have been engaged in work immersion as

per DepEd order. “We, the Grade 12 students of Ramon Torres National High School has

been deployed in different immersion sites wherein in these sites, we were able to apply

what we have learned in school to the actual workplaces. This work immersion is a way

to make us, the K to 12 graduates a globally competitive individual. During our 80 hour

work immersion, we were able to experience many thing regarding “work”. And these

experiences are of great help to us, the future employees of the society.
JOURNAL

Day 1

The Immersion Program started with an Orientation that was conducted to those chosen

by Riverside College together with the members of the Ramon Torres Senior High

School Immersion faculty. It was held at the Ramon Torres Senior High School where

instructions were given as well as the rules, guidelines and the framework of the

Immersion Program. We were given specific groupings so as to have the best possible

experience in this learning process.

Day 2

Along with the group I belonged to, the second day of the Immersion Program was for us

to be exposed to the College of Nursing. Here we were given specific tasks and were also

given the chance to observe the goings on in the office of the department. The College of

Nursing is one of the first and biggest courses offered for Riverside.

Day 3

My third day in the Work Immersion Program, our group was assigned at the Physical

Therapy Department. In this department we also learn the value of exercise and were able

to be given the change to try out the equipments of the department. It was here also that

we learned how important Physical Therapy is.

Day 4

The fourth day of Immersion Program was dedicated for us to observe and join in the

activities of the Radiology Technology where we were showed how the X-Ray machines

were operated. It was here that we were able to learn how technology and science helps

in the study and the practice of medicine and healing.

Day 5
The first week of Immersion ended with us being assigned to the BSBE Department of

Riverside College. For this day, we were grouped together with another group (Group 4)

in the observation of things to learn in this specific department.

Day 6

The second week of the Immersion Program started with our being assigned at the

Psychology Department. In the office of this department, we were exposed to different

types of testing materials as well as the processes that were used by the staff to make the

department one of the busiest of the school. We were also given advises, career tips and

other tidbits during our conversations with the staff and the students under the

department.

Day 7

Tuesday, our seventh day in the Immersion Program gave us very inciting knowledge and

first hand experience on the College of Medicine. Here, were were given a change to

interact with soon to be doctors as well as given lectures and other additional learnings

that are benefitial for ourselves. Part of this was the talk on the 10 Herbal Medicines

which are approved by the Department of Health.

Day 8

We were also given a chance to be exposed to other departments other than those who are

specifically clinical. The 8th day of Immersion was for us to be assigned to one of the

Entrepreneurship Departments of the college. It was here that we learned a little bit about

business and how it affects us as a society.

Day 9

The day before our last day of Immersion was for us to be assigned at the Medical

Technology Department. We learned how to do the steps in Blood Typing as well as

given instructions on other department related specialization such as laboratory work and

others.

Day 10
The last day of the Immersion Program for us assigned at Riverside College was mainly

for the handing of Certification of Completion as well as the examination where we were

given a chance to test how much we learned from the experience as well as for us to

figure out if we have what it takes or the interest to study further in any of the department

that we were exposed to.

REFLECTION

Having the immersion was really a good start to experience how it feels to be in a

work place.

For me, I was so to fortunate enough to have my immersion at the Riverside

College because in the strand of STEM, only the few of us were able to be accepted to

have our immersion there because the school don’t usually accept Working Immersions.

Working with other immersion students in our group and from other groups gave us the

opportunity to learn from the different departments of the school.

So far, my experience there was fun. After a few weeks of immersion, I have

realized some things that will really be useful for my future. First, punctuality is very

essential because in this simple way, you can how serious you are to your job, next would

be patience. Patience when it comes to the tasks that they’re going to give you, as well as

the times that you’re just waiting for the next task that will be given to you, even if you

already got bored waiting for nothing. And lastly, always poses a positive attitude.

Because positivity is next to tranquillity.

On a particular task in which I am exposed to it and know how it works. We were

assigned to specific partner institution, business organization or establishment parallel to

our specializations in order to help us reinforce our knowledge from classrooms and

enhance our skills.

It was just like yesterday when I started my work immersion and now it was

finished. On my 10 days of work immersion from November 26 to December 7. I can say

that it was all worth it for I experienced on how to be a student at the Riverside College

and exposed to the different medical courses they offer. The knowledge I gain during my

immersion really adds-up on my knowledge and it widens my understanding

To sum it all up, I am glad for another experiences that I will treasure the most.

There, I have experienced new things that aren’t familiar with the things I usually do at

school. I have met new people. And learned something.
