Chapter 3

The document outlines the methodology used for a study on perceptions of depression among students. It describes the following: 1) A quantitative research method using surveys and questionnaires was used to collect numerical data from students. 2) 188 students from grades 7-12 at Sto. Niño De Praga Academy participated in the study out of 198 possible respondents. 3) A self-made survey questionnaire was used to collect data on demographic information and perceptions of factors contributing to depression.

CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the researcher methodology that will be used in the study.

It contains the following sections. (a) Method of Research (b) Population and Sampling

(c) Respondents (d) Research Instrument (e) Data Gathering Procedure.

Research Method

Quantitative methods emphasize objective measurements and the statistical,

mathematical or numerical analysis of data collected through polls, questionnaires or by

manipulating pre-existing statistical data using computational techniques. Quantitative

research focuses on gathering numerical data and generalizing it across groups of people

or to explain a particular phenomenon.

Population and Sampling

This researcher conducted this study in Sto. Niño De Praga Academy of La Paz

Homes II, Inc. It includes the following grade levels: Grade 7, Grade 8, Grade 9, Grade

10, Grade 11 and Grade 12 as the respondents of this study.

Table of Respondents

The respondents of this study came from the Junior High School Students and

Senior High School Students who were currently enrolled in Sto. Niño De Praga Academy

of La Paz Homes II Inc (SNDPA-LPH). Namely;

Table 1. Breakdown of the possible respondents of the researcher’s study.

Grade Level Projected number Actual Number of Percentage

of respondents Respondents

Grade 7 47 47 23.73%

Grade 8 41 39 19.69%

Grade 9 34 30 15.15%

Grade 10 22 20 10.10%

Grade 11 39 38 19.19%

Grade 12 14 14 7.07%

Total Population 198 188 94. 93%

The Table 1 shows the breakdown of the respondents that take part in this

research study. One Hundred Eighty Eight (188) out of One Hundred Ninety Eight (198)

responded this study.

Research Instrument

The data and the information needed in this study were gathered through the use

of a Self – Made Survey Questionnaire that was made by the researcher. The

Questionnaire focused on the Perception on Contributory Factors of Depression to the

Students in Sto. Niño De Praga Academy of La Paz Homes II Inc. The Questionnaire

were divided in two forms: the first form was intended for the demographic profile of the

respondents ( Form A ); the second form was for the survey questionnaires ( Form B ). In

Form A, the respondents were asked to answer questions about their personal

information such as Name; Age; Gender; Year/Level and in Form B, the respondents

were asked to answer questions related to the focus of the study, the information that was

gathered use to obtain the expected results.

Validation of the Instrument

The instrument to be used was subjected for validation by the experts along the

line of their study as recommended by the school. The said instrument was validated by

Dr. Wilma U. Galicia, the school administrator of Sto. Niño De Praga Academy of La Paz

Homes II, Inc. in Trece Martires City Cavite, and Ms. Juvylyn Dela Cruz. The sample

represented the following categories; Friends, Family, Relationship, Social Media. All

corrections, suggestions, and revisions were incorporated. These were used as bases of

the researcher for improving the instrument for the final version of the questionnaire.
Data Gathering Procedure

To obtain the necessary data and information needed for the study, several steps

were taken. First, a written communication was sent to the office of the principal of the

institution asking permission to distribute the Self-made survey Questionnaires that was

prepared by the researcher to the respondents, which was in this study the junior High

School and High School Students of Sto. Niño De Praga Academy of La Paz Homes II

Inc. Second, the researcher distributed the questionnaires after gaining the approval of

the School Principal. And lastly, the researcher immediately retrieved all the

questionnaires the moment after the respondents finished answering the questions that

was listed.

Statistical Treatment of the Data

Statistical Treatment of Data was essential to the researcher in order to determine

the validity and reliability of his research instruments. Also, these may be used as the

bases for making inferences, interpretations, conclusions or generalizations. The

following statistical tools and procedures were used to analyze and interpret the data

gathered. These tools were used to answer the problems of the study.

Frequency Count.

This statistical tool was used to determine the quantity of responses made by the

respondents to the different questions. This tool was used to answer Problems number

1, and No. 2.
Percentage

This was applied to establish a comparative value of an item to the whole activity

particularly in relation to the profile of the respondents. This tool was used to answer

Problem No. 1, and 2.

Weighted Mean

This was used as the basis of whatever gets the lowest perception on contributory

factor of depression. This tool was used to answer Problem No. 2 and No. 3.

Average Weighted Mean

A statistical tool obtained through adding the weighted mean of every respondent

for each category. This tool was used to answer Problem No. 2 and No. 3.

Ranking

This statistical tool was used to determine the statement who fall in the highest

position. This was used to answer Problem No. 2 and No 3.

Scale

To know Perception on Contributory Factors of Depression to the Students of Sto.

Niño De Praga Academy of La Paz Homes II Inc., the following scales was used by the

researcher. This was used to answer Problem No. 2.

5 – Always

4 – Frequently

3 – Sometimes

2 – Rarely
1 – Never

Likerts Scale

To know the Perception on Contributory Factors of Depression to the Students in

Sto. Niño De Praga Academy of La Paz Homes II Inc., the following scales were used

by the researcher.

4.50 – 5.00 – Highly Affective

3.50 – 4.49 – Affective

2.50 – 3.49 – Moderately Affective

1.50 – 2.49 – Below Inaffective

This statistical tool was used to answer Problem No. 2 and No 3
