Session 4 - SCAMPER Method PDF

SCAMPER is a technique for generating ideas through substitutions, combinations, adaptations, modifications, putting things to other uses, eliminating elements, and rearranging elements. It was applied to the Toyota iQ, the world's smallest 4-seat car. Some ideas generated were substituting the front-mounted differential, rearranging the center take-off steering gear, adapting an under-floor fuel tank, minimizing the air conditioning unit size, modifying the asymmetric dashboard, and minimizing the ultra-slim seat design. The iQ's design philosophy of "Vibrant Clarity" was also discussed in relation to its proportions, integrated architecture, and freeform geometrics.

SESSION - 4 :

S.C.A.M.P.E.R

Delivered by : Arya Wirabhuana, S.T, M.Sc

I. What is S.C.A.M.P.E.R?

II. How to use it?

III. Why we need it ?
Do you believe that creativity is GIFTED?

And we can NOT learn how to create

special things.
I. What is

S.C.A.M.P.E.R
Everything new is a Check lai thu tu xuat

Combine

services to create something new.
Helper Questions
Trigger Words

Adapt
Think about taking an existing idea to solve
your problem.
The solution of your problem is probably out
there already.
Bear in mind that some new ideas or
inventions are borrowed to some degrees.
“I can adapt ... in this way ... to ...”
Helper Questions
Trigger Words

incorporate

settle in
become accustomed

contextualize
transform
For instance, the problem is:

"How can KFC increase sales in its business?"

S (Substitute): "What can It substitute in selling process?”

C (Combine): "How can It combine selling with other

activities?”

A (Adapt): "What can It adapt or copy from someone else’s

selling process?"
Instead of using waiters , customers can serve themselves.
 Creating a new service

It can bring restaurants with real estate instead of simply

hamburgers .
 Making more profit

It can adapt COMBO sets with bundle pricing to attract more

people.
 Offering customers more choices. They can have a
discount if they use COMBO.
When you face one issue, do you want to
expand or simplify it?
Negative  simplify Positive  expand
Magnify
Magnify or exaggerate your ideas

Increase its perceived value

Give you new insights

For instance, the problem is:

"I want to invent a new type of pen.”

Substitute - ink with carbon.

Combine - sketches on paper become electronic graphics .

Adapt - pen top as a flashlight.

Modify - body to be flexible.

Put to other uses - use to touch on the computer’s
screen.
Eliminate
Remove unnecessary thing
Think of what might happen if you eliminate
or minimize parts of your idea.
Simplify, reduce, eliminate non-essential
components.
Through repeating that, you can ensure
that only important parts or functions
are remained.

Eliminate – instead of putting the pen in the pocket. You

Rearrange – can write by both top or bottom of the pen.

III. Why we need

S.C.A.M.P.E.R
SCAMPER can be used either in person
(which is not its strength)

or in group brainstorming sessions

(in which there are time constrains and lack of innovative ideas).
In specific situation,
DO NOT say “DON’T know”.
Try your best to find out the answer for each
questions by SCAMPERS.
In specific
This is yoursituation,
problem, DO NOT
your job,say “DON’T
your work,
know”, try your best to find out the answer
your opportunity so you by
for each questions should know which
SCAMPERS.
are principle questions.
Take time to think about the answers and
NEVER give up.
Hope you can find out tons of special
ideas in the future!
