Answer:USA Has Five Time Zones Due To Its Great Longitudinal Extent

The document discusses time zones and meridians, explaining that the USA has five time zones due to its longitudinal extent and that India uses 82.5° E as its standard meridian. It also describes the difference between local time and standard time, and how tides affect the Earth's rotation by slowly increasing the length of a day. Additionally, it outlines the four seasons caused by the Earth's revolution and tilt, and describes the torrid, temperate and frigid heat zones of the Earth.

1) USA has how many time zones and why?

Answer:USA has five time zones due to its great longitudinal extent
2) Which longitude is considered as the standard meridian for India? 1

Ans :- 82.5° E

3) “Places located on different meridian have different local time” give the
reason? 2

Ans :- During the earth’s rotation each place experiences noon at the same time on the
same meridian. Earth takes 24 hours to complete one rotation and in every 1°

4) What is Prime Meridian? 1

Ans :- Any point on the globe can be located by knowing its latitude and longitude.

5) What are the lines called that extending from the North Pole to South Pole?1

Ans :- Meridians of longitudes

6) What is the difference between the local time and the standard time? 2

Ans :- Local Time: When the sun reaches the highest point in the sky, while crossing
the meridian of any place, it is noon (12.00). At some places watches are adjusted
according to this time. It will be known as local time. Places having the same
meridian of longitude have the same local time.
Standard Time: In countries with a large east-west extent, the variation in local time is
very great. It creates confusion over train timing, flight timing etc. To solve this
problem, the local time of a particular meridian is taken as the standard time for the
entire region of the country.

7) How tide affects the rotation of the Earth? 2

Ans :- Tides are rise and fall of ocean water caused by the combined effect of the
gravitational force of the Moon and the Sun. Tidal friction produces extremely slow
secular changes in the rotation of the Earth. It increases the length of day by some 2.3
milliseconds per day per century.

8) Describe all the four distinct phases of seasons caused by the revolution of the
Earth.5
Ans :- The cycle of seasons is the combined effect of the revolution of the Earth and
the tilt of its axis. The four distinct phases of season recognised are:

1. Summer – The part of the Earth that tilts towards the Sun has longer days and
the weather is warm.
2. Autumn – The Earth begins to tilt away from the Sun, bringing in cooler
weather.
3. Winter – The part of the Earth which is tilted farthest from the Sun receives
very little warmth. Days are short and the weather is cold.
4. Spring – The Earth begins to tilt back towards the Sun, bringing in warmer
weather.
9) Describe briefly the different heat zone of the earth. 5

Ans :- Different heat zone of the earth:–

1. Torrid Zone– It is the zone lies that between Tropic of Cancer (23½ºN) to
Tropic of Capricorn (23½ºS). The Equator is passes through the middle of this
zone. It receives maximum sunlight throughout the year and sun rays are
almost vertical over it in the entire year. Hence, recorded high temperature.
2. Temperate Zone– The zone lies between the Tropic of Cancer and Arctic Circle
in northern hemisphere and from Tropic of Capricorn to Antarctic Circle in the
southern hemisphere. The Sun rays are inclined over this zone, thus intensity of
heat is less. It has moderate climatic conditions.

3. Frigid Zone– This zone remains frozen and covered with ice sheets throughout
the year. Hence, it is called Frigid Zone. It lies between 66½ºN to 90°N in northern
hemisphere and 66½ºS to 90°S in southern hemisphere. It is the zone of extreme
cold climate with little or no plants; only mosses and lichens grow on rocks.
