Since I was a little girl, I have loved children. I recall being just 8 years old and helping

my parents do Church nursey on Sundays. I loved every minute of it, and I began babysitting

and working at a camp at 11. As I got older, I realized that I was often the friend people came to

for advice or be a shoulder to cry on. When I enter Wake Forest as an undergraduate I jumped

right in to Psychology. Along the way, I found that where I felt the most at home was in the

world of Counseling, a close friend of Psychology. I applied for master’s programs and accepted

a spot here, at Wake Forest, a place I have loved my entire life and especially the last four

years.

The last few years I have not been as focused on working with children, but as history

indicates, children were a theme that emerged in my card sort activity. When I noticed this

theme, I felt renewed with direction. I had questioned where and what population I was really

driven to work with and how choosing an internship site could affect my future. I felt so

overwhelmed by this decision that I hadn’t taken much initiative to narrow down where I

wanted to apply and where I saw myself in the future. Thanks to this emerging theme, I sat

down and applied at every child focused and related agency in Winston-Salem for my internship

experience. This is just the first step in making my constructivist resume come to fruition.

I would like to work with children and families in some capacity and I feel pulled towards

working with children with cancer. To make this happen, I need to conduct informational

interviews with counselors currently working with my population of interest. I would like to

know how they got into their current position and what they enjoy about it. I also want to

become play therapy certified. I started working with a play therapist at my practicum site and

she has already given me a lot of information about the certification process. She has also let
me sit in on sessions and helped me learn techniques. I need to continue learning from play

therapists and get certified after I graduate from the Master’s program.

Finally, I need to join the ACA and NCCA and attend conferences. I missed out on

opportunities this year to present my own research, make connections, and learn from the

work of others in the field. I have to become more proactive in my pursuit of professional

development. I have focused too much on the here and now instead of also considering how

these associations can help me develop now and in the future.

These are just a few things that I can do now to help me build the future I want to have.

I feel more grounded and sure of the direction I want to go in the future and I feel excited to

start working toward the things outlined in my constructivist resume.
