Planning and Design Lab Notes Sulphates

The document describes an experiment to test the hypothesis that barium sulphate is less soluble than calcium sulphate. The experiment involves precipitating barium sulphate and calcium sulphate by mixing solutions and measuring the mass of each precipitate to compare their solubility.

PROBLEM STATEMENT: Your grandmother has to do a barium metal test to locate and
diagnose stomach ulcers. She is hesitant to swallow the suspension of Barium Sulphate
because Barium compounds are poisonous. However, the doctor told her although Barium
is toxic, Barium Sulphate can be used in the body.
Suggest a hypothesis for the doctor’s statement and plan and design a lab to test the
hypothesis.

HYPOTHESIS: Barium sulphate is less soluble than Calcium sulphate

AIM: to compare the solubility of barium sulphate to that of calcium sulphate.

APPARATUS: (4) 100cm3 beakers, glass stirring rod, measuring cylinder, funnel, electronic
balance.

MATERIALS: 20cm3 1M NaSO4, 20cm3 1M BaNO3, 20cm3 1M NaSO4, 20cm3 1M CaNO3, (2)
sheets of filter paper.

DIAGRAM:

Fig 1: Set up for experiment

METHOD:
1. Using the measuring cylinder, measure and pour 15cm3 of 1M NaSO4 in a beaker.
2. Rinse the measuring cylinder then measure and pour 15cm3 of 1M BaNO3 into the
same beaker.
3. Filter the precipitate using filter paper, the funnel and a beaker.
4. Measure the mass of a dry sheet of filter paper.
5. Measure the mass of the precipitate and filter paper using the electronic balance.
6. Repeat steps: (1) to (5) using NaSO4 and CaNO3.

VARIABLES:
Controlled: Volume of reactants, concentration of reactants.
Manipulated: Reactants.
Responding: Mass of precipitate.

EXPECTED RESULTS: The mass of the precipitate of BaSO4 would be greater than that of the
mass of the precipitate of CaSO4.

TREATMENT OF RESULTS:
If the mass of the precipitate of BaSO4 is greater than that of the mass of the precipitate of
CaSO4 then the hypothesis is correct. If the mass of the precipitate of BaSO4 is not greater
than that of the mass of the precipitate of CaSO4 then the hypothesis is not correct.

SOURCES OF ERROR: The use of impure reactants

ASSUMPTION: Mass of water in filter paper is negligible

LIMITATIONS: The mass of the precipitate without water.
