Global Value Chains (GVCS) : Brazil

Brazil participates significantly in global value chains (GVCs), especially through backward participation where it imports intermediate goods and services. Brazil's GVC participation rate was over 50% for backward participation and around 25% for forward participation in 2009. The distribution of value added along GVCs shows Brazil relies heavily on foreign value added, with around 87% of the value added in Brazil's final demand coming from foreign sources according to 2009 data. Brazil's exports also have a large foreign value added component, with its domestic value added making up only around 1.5% of gross exports in 2009. Services play an important role in Brazil's manufacturing exports, with sectors like wholesale, retail and transportation accounting for around 29% of the value
