DEFINE THE TERM TENSE

The concept of tense in English is a method that we use to refer to time - past, present and future.
So, we talk about time in English with tense.

96
WHAT IS THE PRESENT PERFECT TENSE AND HOW IS IT USED?

The present perfect tense is used when one intends to indicate:

o an action that occurred at a time which is indefinite and has its effect on the subject

o or an action that occurred many times and has the possibility to occur in the
present/future

o or an action that began in the past and is still going on in the present.

IN ORDER TO CONSTRUCT SENTENCES USING THE PRESENT PERFECT TENSE,

YOU MUST FOLLOW A SPECIFIC STRUCTURE:

Structure:

Subject + have/has + verb in the past participle form + PREDICATE

Using Present Perfect Tense

To create the present perfect tense of any verb, you will combine the present tense of the verb "to
have" plus the past participle of the main verb of the sentence. The past participle of a regular
verb is the base word plus –ed and irregular verbs change their vowels e.g swim –swam, run –ran

LET US FOLLOW THE STRUCTURE:

Subject + have/has + verb in the past participle form + PREDICATE

Examples:

o Alex has read the book through. (No time is indicated)

o I have read this poem many times. (Not habitual but occurred many times in the past)

o He has lived in this apartment for 15 years. (Still going on)

 Has lived: She has lived here all her life.

 Have written: They have written three letters already.

 Have worked: I have worked here since I graduated school.

97
 Has done: He has finished his homework.

 Have been: We have been to Canada.

 Has forgotten: She has forgotten her folder.
