1. General
Talegaon Dabhade is a medium town in Maval Taluka of Pune district
of Maharashtra State and it is situated on Mumbai-Bangalore (NH-4). The
Mumbai-Pune Express way is passing about 5 km. Talegaon is situated about
32 kms from Pune city and 120 km from Mumbai. Talegaon has a railway
station on Mumbai-Pune broad gauge section of Central Railway and few
Mail Express Trains & all passenger trains stop at Talegaon. The suburban
local train service from Pune to Lonavala has a regular stop at Talegaon &
there are few local trains plying from Talegaon to Pune Station & vice versa.
The mean altitude of Talegaon is 620 M above mean sea level. It is situated at
a latitude of 18 43’ North & Longitude of 73 41’ East. The Municipal limit
is bounded by Indrayani river on North Side, Partly by Dehu Road
Cantonment Board & Partly by Central Railway track on East side, Partly by
NH4 & Partly by a hillock on South side & agricultural fields of Talegaon on
West side. The total area of Talegaon Dabhade Municipal limits is 1066
hectares.

The civic affairs are looked after by Talegaon-Dabhade Municipal

Council (TDMC), which is a ‘B’ Class Municipal Council as per Maharashtra
Govt. norms. The Municipal Council is established in the year 1966. There are
two large lakes (having area of about 45 hectares) in the city limits but due to
inflow of waste water from adjoining areas, the water from both the lakes is
not potable. Electricity and telephone facilities are already available in this
town. There are industrial establishments located around the South side of the
town. In Talegaon Municipal limits an industrial area of 65.63 hectares
However, actual development of industrial activities in the industrial area is
yet not started. Efforts are made to establish Industries. This will have great
impact on Talegaon Town as the staff may prefer staying in Talegaon due to

2

its location on Pune-Mumbai National Highway & this may lead more rapid
growth of Talegaon.

2. Phytorid Technology

2.1 INTRODUCTION

Selection of technology for sewage treatment should be based on

criteria such as plant which work without electricity, require minimum
maintenance and most importantly, the technology should be self-sustainable.
National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) has
developed a novel technology based on natural method of treatment of sewage
using constructed wetlands. The technology is named as PHYTORID and has
been awarded national and also two international patents.
Use of plant species along with their root system along with the
natural attenuation processes can be combined together to get the Phytorid
Technology. It is one such technological solution, which can be easily
implemented in cities as well as in rural areas for treatment of wastewater.
The system is based on use of specific plants normally found in natural reed
with filtration and treatment capability. This system can be utilized for a wide
variety of applications. It can be used for treatment of municipal wastewater,
sludge management, treatment of secondary and tertiary treated industrial or
agricultural effluent as well as for the treatment of landfill leachates.
PHYTORID technology has been developed by NEERI especially for
sewage treatment. NEERI is a government research institute under Council of
Scientific and Industrial Research. This is one of the oldest and most reputed
institute for environmental research and consultancy. It is important to note
that the national environmental policy, 2006 also recommends use of
constructed wetland systems for efficient sewage treatment and use it
gainfully for agriculture and other purposes.

2.2 PHYTORID FOR SEWAGE TREATMENT

The main objective of the proposed project is to provide a simple,

feasible, practically sound, eco-friendly, maintenance free and cost-effective
technology, which can handle the sewage waste water treatment leading to
reuse of treated water for purposes like gardening. Components of the system
are shown below;

Phytorid technology for Wastewater Treatment

PHYTORID is a scientifically developed systematic treatment

methodology for waste water. The working of the technology combines
many processes and concepts which are part of natural processes.
Some of the major features of the technology are:

 PHYTORID combines Physical, Biological and Chemical

processes.
 Works on gravity
 Subsurface flow avoiding any mosquitoes or odour problems
 No electric power requirement
 Scalable technology
 Works at lower as well as higher flows without failure
 Easy to maintain
 Adds to aesthetics and natural appearance
 Lower footprint
 Cost effective

2.3 ADVANTAGES OF PHYTORID TECHNOLOGY

 Treatment efficiencies for the removal of BOD, COD and fecal coli-form
are in the range of 80-95%,
 Nutrients such as N and P are removed up to 80%, which is greater than
the traditional chemical methods.
 It is a very cost effective technology when compared with the traditional
wastewater treatment methods.
 Since it utilizes natural vegetation and rhizosphere microorganisms, it is
eco-friendly method of treating sewage.
 An important factor to be considered is the aesthetic improvement that is
provided by this methodology.
 No mosquitoes and odour nuisance
 The treated water can be used for enhancement of environmental
architecture such as roadside fountains.
 The quality of treated water is comparable to irrigation standards

2.4 METHODOLOGY

The treatment process consists of primary treatment plant followed by

Phytorid treatment system. The hydraulic loading shall be started with 40% capacity
in the beginning till the time of acclimatization of the plants to the hydraulic load and
shall be later increased to 100%. The further loading and efficiency shall be
monitored to establish how much more of either hydraulic or BOD load can be
effectively used. This would entirely depend upon the variation in the sewage
characteristics used for treatment.

2.5 LAND AREA REQUIREMENTS

The total area required for sewage treatment plant for a typical
capacity of 9700 m3/day is approximately 12700 m2. The area does not
include amenities, approach and other needs for maintenance, which could be
an additional 10%. Based on the land availability and shape of the land,
design can also be changed.

2.6 SITE SPECIFIC DESIGN

In order to treat 9.7 MLD, we propose a plant in Site-2 as 3 modules x

2.5 MLD and 1 modules x 2.2 MLD (Total 9.7 MLD). The typical drawings
for all plants are given below including settler tank and Phytorid bed.

2.7 TREATMENT EFFICIENCIES

Phytorid system being natural method, the final efficiencies as

indicated in Table 1, will be achieved after the system is stabilized which may
require a period of 6 months after commissioning:

6

Table 1: Performance of PHYTORID for urban waste

Pollutant Performance (% removal)

Biochemical oxygen demand 80 – 95
Chemical oxygen demand 85 – 95
Total suspended solids 75 – 95
Total nitrogen 60 – 70
Phosphate 50 – 60
Fecal coli-form 85 – 95

2.8 OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE

This technology is natural system; as a result operation is mostly

passive and requires little operator intervention. Requirement for area can
change on various factors such as load (kg BOD/day), ambient temperature,
topography of the region, flow characteristics, etc. Maintaining uniform flow
across the Phytorid system through inlet and outlet adjustment is extremely
important to achieve the expected treatment performance.

2.9 SITE VISIT DETAILS

The site visit was made along with Nagar Parishad officer at site-2 in
Talegaon Dabhade. The proposed sites were identified for construction of
sewage treatment plant using Phytorid Technology. Presently, total generated
sewage is discharges to Indrayani River through nallahs. As per information
provided, the 9.7 MLD STP using Phytorid Technology is to be located near
solid waste dumping site, Talegaon Dabhade. The capacity of STP was
decided as per survey report of SUN-KON provided by Nagar Parishad staff.
