Control System Analysis and Design

This document appears to be a final exam for a control systems analysis course. It contains multiple choice and short answer questions testing knowledge of key concepts like transfer functions, signal flow graphs, poles and zeros, natural frequency, damping ratio, and time response characteristics. The exam covers identifying system properties from transfer functions, converting block diagrams to signal flow graphs and determining various path and loop gains, solving for poles and zeros of transfer functions, analyzing natural frequency, damping ratio and response type, and calculating time constants, rise time, settling time and DC gain from transfer functions.

Final Examination
CONTROL SYSTEM ANALYSIS

I. Identification. NO ANY FORM OF ERASURES IS ALLOWED. 2 points each.

1. The order of the system when there is one real pole in the transfer function.
2. It is a dimensionless quantity characterizing the rate at which an oscillation in the
system’s response decays due to effects such as viscous friction and electrical
resistance.
3. It is a line segment in signal flow graphs which joins two nodes. It has both gain and
direction.
4. It is the limit of the transient response as time “t” approaches infinity.
5. It means studying the output of a system which is represented as a function of time
when the system is subjected to an input which also represented as a function of time.
6. The gain along any path from the input to the output of the signal flow graph.
7. The frequency in rad/s that the system will oscillate at when there is no damping.
8. It is a point in signal flow graphs which represents either a variable or a signal
9. The values of the Laplace transform variable, s, which cause the transfer function to
become zero.
10. A response which present in the short period of time immediately after the input is
applied.
11. It is the total gain (product of individual gains) around any path in the signal flow graph.
12. It is a node, which has both incoming and outgoing branches.
13. It is the time it takes for the system’s response to decrease to 37% of the initial value for
a system’s free response.
14. The product of loop gains from non‐touching loops, taken two, three, four, or more at a
time.
15. The stage of the system’s response as time “t” approaches infinity.
II. Convert the following block diagrams into signal flow graphs(5 points) then find the forward
path gains(2 points each), loop gains(2 points each), non-touching loop gains(2 points each)
and the transfer function of the system(10 points).

1.

2.

III. SOLVE THE FOLLOWING. 3 points each.

A. Solve for the poles and zeroes of the transfer function.

(𝑠2 +5𝑠−14) (3𝑠2 +5𝑠−12)

1. (2𝑠2 +7𝑠+6)
2. (𝑠2 +12𝑠+36)

B. Natural Frequency, Damping Ratio and Type of system
