6.0 MATERIAL

Only material considered suitable by the Engineer

Engineer-in-Charge
Charge shall be employed for the
construction and the considered unsuitable shall be disposed off, as directed by Engineer-in-
Engineer
charge.

The contractor shall give the samples of earth proposed to use for filling along with the
following characteristics of the samples to Engineer
Engineer-in-Charge,
Charge, prior to collection and use for
approval.
pproval. The tests for these characteristics shall be done in a laboratory / test house.

1) Mechanical analysis or grain size distribution as per IS: 2720 Part

Part-4.
2) Liquid Limit as per IS: 2720 part
part-5.
3) Plastic Limit as per IS: 2720 part
part-5.
4) Moisture density relationship
tionship as per IS: 2720 part
part-7.

The material (soil) used for filling shall be free from boulders, lumps, tree roots, rubbish or any
deleterious matter. Material (soil) having plasticity index less than 20 shall be used for filling.
Soil having laboratoryy Maximum dry density less than than1.5 grams/cc
ms/cc shall not be used. The
unsuitable waste material is disposed off in such a manner that there is no likelihood of its
getting mixed with the material proposed to be used for filling.

7.0 METHODOLOGY

The sequential
quential activities and corresponding method statements are as follows:

7.1. LAYOUT & SETTING OUT

Layout work shall be carried out with accuracy. A layout Plan/sketch shall be prepared, prior
to execution of work. All reference point shall be maintained and shall not be removed from
its position and existing spot levels shall be taken and recorded before starting excavation
work and site spot levels shall be offered for inspection by ONGC.

7.2. CLEARING AND STRIPPING:

The areas including depressions, where fill

filling
ing or cutting is to be carried out shall be cleared or
stripped completely of bushes, roots, vegetation, plantation, trees, shrubs, organic and other
objectionable materials. All these shall be completely uprooted virgin soil exposed and not
merely strapped
ed at the surface. All soft patches must be worked out to remove soft soil and
selected approved earth must be filled back and the areas (area coming under filling)
compacted to obtain 90% of Maximum laboratory dry density of soil as per IS: 2720 Part-7. Part
The
he depth of stripping shall be generally 50 to 150mm as directed by Engineer
Engineer--In-Charge.

7.3. EARTHWORK IN EXCAVATION / CUTTING:

Excavation or Cutting for this work shall be carried out strictly as per instruction by Engineer-
Engineer
In-Charge.
Charge. If the contractor excavat
excavates
es / cuts beyond the required level, the excavation taken
below the required level shall be made good by filling with approved material to the required
compaction. The final bed and sides of excavation must be leveled, dressed and compacted.
In case of areas
as under excavation for Site Grading, the final surface shall be leveled, dressed
and consolidated by means of sheep foot / power driven rollers to obtain maximum
compaction. However, no test control is required in these areas.

Shoring and strutting shall be adopted only with the permission of Engineer-In-Charge
Engineer in
writing. Such shoring and strutting shall be follow the necessary specification.

7.4. EARTHWORK IN FILLING:

After clearing, stripping and consolidation of areas as specified in clause 5.2, approved fill
fi
material shall be spread in uniform layers not exceeding 30 centimeters in loose depth. All
clods, lumps shall be broken before compaction.

Successive layers of filling shall not be placed until the layer below has been thoroughly
compacted to satisfy thehe requirements laid down in the specifications. Prior to rolling, the
moisture content of material shall be brought to within plus or minus 2% of the optimum
moisture content as described in IS: 2720 Part
Part-7. The moisture content shallll preferably be on
the wetet side for potentially expensive soil. After adjusting the moisture content, the layers
shall be thoroughly compacted by either sheep foot roller / power driven roller / vibratory
roller till the maximum laboratory dry density is obtained.

Each layer shall

all be tested in field for density and accepted by Engineer
Engineer-In-Charge
Charge subject to
achieving the required density before laying the next layer. A minimum of one test per
500Sqm for each layer shall be conducted.

If the layer fails to meet the required densit

density,
y, it shall be reworked or the material shall be
replaced and method of construction altered as directed by Engineer
Engineer-In-Charge
Charge to obtain the
required density. The filling shall be finished in conformity with the alignment, levels, cross-
cross

section and dimensions

ons as shown in drawing. Earthen embankment shall be filled 300mm
more on both sides, where height is more than 1 meter and this extra filling shall be dressed
after compaction in conformity with alignment level, cross
cross-section
section and dimension as shown
in the drawing to achieve proper compaction in the slope. Extra material shall be removed
and disposed.

7.5. TOLERANCES:

General site grading including cutting and filling in depressions shall be carried out within up
down tolerances 0 +- 5cms of final lines grades and slopes.

7.6. REMOVAL OF SURPLUS EARTH:

Surplus earth and soil excavation and general site grading shall be removed from the
construction areas to the area demarcated by Engineer
Engineer-In-Charge
Charge embankments, roads and
storage areas where required. The useful rock available shall be stacked at the location as
decided by Engineer-In-Charge.
Charge.

Materials containing brush roots or other perishable materials will not be considered
suitable. The suitability of materials and their disposition in the work shall be subjected to
t the
approval of Engineer.

8.0 HEALTH, SAFETY & ENVIRONMENT

Approved procedure for Health, Safety & Environment plan shall be followed. To comply with
ONCG’s ISO Standard requirements the followings precautions and measures shall be taken
care of:

 Entire battery limit area shall be cordo

cordoned using red and white colour zebra
bra tape.
 All employees working within the battery limit shall wear personnel protective
equipment(PPE) see Appendix
Appendix-1 of HSE plan
 All employees shall be confirmed and follow company’s Health and safety Policy,
Environment Policy, HSE Plan and also owner’s / DIL’s Environment Policy and Plan.

9.0 ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA

Acceptance criteria for the above work shall be as per Client specification. In the event of
conflict between this specification and clients section, then the requirement of client
specification shall govern.

10.0 DOCUMENTATION:
Note: In case of any conflict between the requirements of this procedure and ONGC
ONGC. Specification the
later shall govern.
