Methodology
METHOD OF RESEARCH

1. Primary Research:
12 questionnaires were distributed fairly to both females and males. Only 11 respondents
gave back there response regarding the questions on the product.

2. Secondary Research:
The external sources such as Internet, textbooks, course book and Library research, were
very helpful in completion of the project.

1) Product Details
2) Product Name: “Coconut Serving Tray” - the name of the item and this itself depicts the
product. Uniqueness of the product name is that the clients can without much of a stretch
distinguish and comprehend the product as well as motivate the item. In fact, the product
can be utilized as a coconut serving tray for foods and salad, furthermore for adornment
or as souvenir.
3) Product Description: Coconut serving tray acts as a souvenir item and as a result, the
material used in the manufacturing this product is related to the iTaukei culture,
therefore, materials utilized are accessible consistently. This product exhibits the Fijian
culture, innovativeness and how characteristic segments can be consolidated together to
make a one of a kind product which tourists can take home to their country as a
recognition of their visit to Fiji. It’s comprised of coconut palm timber, sandpaper and
vanish. The coconut palm timber is kiln dried and then is cut to shape using copping saw.
4) Product Materials: The raw material used in the making of thof the serving tray includes
the coconut palm timber, carbon pencil for sketching the shape on the timber, copping
saw, sandpaper, vanish. The process of making the product, required us to bring all raw
materials together in the creation of final product. The product is then wrapped in brown
paper and is ready to go on the shelf for sale, placed in a voivoi basket which gives an
ecofriendly look to the customers.
5) Positioning: The “coconut serving tray” a product that is for disinfected purposes and the
aim is to direct potential customers to have a healthy life. The coconut serving tray is also
used as a souvenir and therefore the targeted listeners are the citizens and tourists as well
as hotels and resorts.
6) Uniqueness: Coconut serving tray is a product that has its own uniqueness because of
stability and it is a versatile product that is it is used as serving tray for food and fruits
and as a remembrance. Coconut serving tray is Fijian made and is better than its
competitors such as handiworks shops because the competitors has a simple serving tray
and is only used as a display piece of a particular item. The demanding feature of the
product is that it is used hygienically and ecofriendly environment.

7) Benefits: The benefit is that the tray can be exclusively used around the kitchen (can be
used in microwave oven) and on dining tables as a salad and snacks trays. The product at
the same time will be easily accessible to customers, as it will be sold in the outlets such
as Jacks of Fiji, Tappoos and many resorts and hotels along with the airport duty free
centers.
8) Shelf life or expiry date and Packaging: Due to its hard wearing texture, the product
will not break or crack should you drop them.

Our company has designed a product which is made up of parts of coconut woods (COCONUT
WOOD TRAY). It includes the cost of making the item, and sets the value that spreads cost in

addition to an objective benefit. This will persuade the consumers to purchase the coconut
tray. The method of pricing that we used are cost base pricing which includes the process in
making the product, the various materials which was involved in the production and persuades
the buyers to buy the product. Thus, it will be based on the customer’s preferences to purchase
the product. The product is quite affordable since the coconut wood tray will last long which
can be used for various purposes. However our competitors are those people who are selling similar
products at the market but the production level will be low since our company produces the
product in different shapes and sizes which makes the product unique in many ways. The cost
of coconut plate will be $17.35.

10) Place/ Distribution Details


The product “coconut serving tray” will be sold in popular handicraft markets through the
wholesaler and distributor, it will be indirectly sold to customers. The handicraft centers
act as an wholesaler and distributor of the product to suitable markets such as Tappoos
city Suva , handicraft section, Tappoos Nadi, Denarau handicraft centers and as well as
Suva Jacks. The basis for this is due to many tourist attraction and popularity in this
location. Many handicraft products are sold from this well-known markets in Fiji.
In order to sell the product to international customers, craft sites will be used such as art
fire and Bonanza. This sites are an online market place similar to eBay or Amazon. This
sites are secure for customers in terms of payment and the popularity of this sites are
high. It will enhance the sale of the product.
Distributors and wholesalers will also be engaged as they are already established and
have a bigger network, which means that the product will be available and accessible to
customers in more places. The marketing and advertisement made by these wholesalers
and distributors will also help in making the product more known to the people.
Some of the wholesalers and distributors that will be approached to sell the product
would be Prouds Fiji, Tappoos and Jacks of Fiji. These shops will enable the product to
be available at the airport duty free shops, which will generate sales from tourists buying
products such as “coconut serving tray” as a souvenir.

11) Promotion
The promotion that our company has done for the public to be made aware of the product
being promoted in the market. This was made available through the usage of various
types of Medias such as; television, newspaper, radio, and social media will be used to
advertise our product. Foremost, for the advertisements in the television. It is mostly
shown on FBC on the Buy and Sell program. This program is mostly aired on Saturdays
from 10am and sometimes also during intervals.
In addition to, Fiji Times and Fiji Sun are the newspapers that were also used to advertise
our product. This advertisement would be on Saturdays and Sundays only for two weeks
sometimes, while for Radio the advertisement on this is mostly announced on Navtarang
and Sargam during the weekends. Furthermore, social Medias like Facebook and other
known websites are also sometimes used to promote onto our product as this is preferred
as an easier way to advertise.
Consequently, the sales promotion techniques that will be used in promoting the product
is free samples. Another technique that our company will use is this packaged deal, (buy
one large coconut serving tray and get a small coconut serving tray free)
