Christian Grace School of Cavite: Brgy. San Gabriel, GMA Cavite (046) 890-2753

This document outlines a lesson plan for teaching quadratic equations over several class periods. It includes the objectives to create and solve quadratic equations using various methods. The lesson will begin with a review and motivation activity, followed by instruction and examples from the teacher. Students will then practice identifying equation types and solving equations. They will conclude by creating their own equations to solve. Progress will be evaluated through quizzes testing the concepts taught.

MATERIALS Student’s textbook ( Next Century Mathematics 9 )

RESOURCES Next Century Mathematics 9
PROCEDURE
I. Introduction/Review (15 minutes.)
 Daily Routine:
Greetings; Prayer; Classroom Management; and Checking of Attendance
 Showing of content and performance standards as well as learning competencies to help the students achieve the desire final task at the end of the quarter.
 Review about the previous lesson.

II. Motivation (25 minutes.)

 Play 3-6-9
 This game is composed of all students. They are not allowed to tell the numbers with 3, 6 and 9 otherwise they will clap.
 Then the student whose number is wrong, the teacher will ask a questions until it last to the end question.
 Each student will be attentive and smart.

III. Instruction/Delivery (440 minutes)

 Guided Discussion
 The teacher will ask students about the topic which is quadratic equation.
 The teacher will give an example of quadratic equation on the board and let them analyse and observe.
 The students will classify the given equations if it is complete or pure quadratic equations.
 The students will create their own quadratic equations on the board.
 The teacher will also talk about on how to solve quadratic equations by: (a) extracting square roots; (b) factoring; (c) completing the square; and (d) using the quadratic formula.
 The teacher will explain the four (4) different types of methods in solving quadratic equations and explain the nature of roots.

 Writing
Quadratic Equation – it has a second degree polynomials with the standard form of 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 = 0.
Two Types: (a) complete quadratic equation – if b is not equal to 0; and
(b) pure or incomplete quadratic equation – if b is equal to 0.

Discriminant – a test for determining the nature of roots of a quadratic equation with the formula of D = 𝑏 2 − 4𝑎𝑐.

Four (4) types of methods in solving Quadratic Equations

1.Extracting Square Root Property
- If 𝑥 2 = 𝑛, and n > 0, then 𝑥 = √𝑛 or 𝑥 = −√𝑛

2. Factoring
- Use the discriminant formula
- Expanding the equation with perfect square trinomial.
3.Completing the Square
- Remember the Procedure:
 Use the Addition Property of Equality to isolate the constant term on the right side of the equation.
 Make the numerical coefficient of the 𝑥 2 – term is equal to 1 by applying the Multiplication Property of Equality.
 Produce a perfect square trinomial on the left side of the equation by adding to both sides the square of one-half the numerical coefficient of
x.
 Factor the resulting PST in Step 3.
 Apply the Square Root Property.
 Solve for x in the resulting linear equations in Step 5.
 Check the answer by substituting the derived values in Step 6 to the equation.

4.Quadratic Formula
- In the quadratic equation of 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐, where a is not equal to 0.
−𝑏 ± √𝑏2 −4𝑎𝑐
- Formula: 𝑥 = 2𝑎

IV. Practice (30 minutes each)

 QE or NOT QE
- The teacher will use the passport (index card) to pick one student number per equation.
- The student will classify if the given equation is Quadratic Equation or Not Quadratic Equation and let them explain.

V. Enrichment (30 minutes)

 Create your equation.
- The students are required to create their own quadratic equations and find its discriminant and solve for the value of x through the use of the four (4)
methods then, check. Observe and analyse the result of your answer.

VI. Evaluation (60 minutes)

 Quizzes
 Identify the types of quadratic equations. Mental Math A. pp. 20 (15 minutes)
 Transform the given equation into its standard form Mental Math B. pp. 20 (20 minutes)
 Find the discriminant and solve the quadratic equations (a) extracting square roots; (b) factoring; (c) completing the square; and (d) using the quadratic formula. Written Math
A-D pp. 21-22 (30 minutes)
