CHAPTER I

Introduction

Only a dead, can be a hero. As the years goes by, people are living in this world with

no idea. What would be us, in the next days or years. Every steps that we take, we live

indifferent aspects in different country. In other Country, there is someone or something

that really honoring them or making them proud of. So that they respect, love and express

the importance of every individual in that place because they made a historical event in

the history. Some examples are landmarks, Statues, and Monument. In landmarks, we

have La Sagrada Familia, St Peter’s Basilica, and Taj Mahal. Like many landmarks the

creation spanned decades and centuries, Barcelona’s famous La Sagrada Familia – a

gothic-meets-Art- Nouveau church designed by renowned artist-architech Antonio Gaudi

– took many long years of constraction. Part church, part art relic, St. Peter’s Basilica is

what you get when some of the art and design world’s greats, like Michelangelo,

Bramante, Bernini, co-create one of the world’s largest churches. And lastly, Taj Mahal.

It is included in the seven new wonders of the world. It is perhaps India’s most

recognizable – andromantic – landmark. Aside from landmarks, there are Statues. Like,

Sphinx, and The Thinker. The famous Sphinx at Giza built 5000 years ago, was the

largest and the oldest statues in the world. The thinker scattered in different museums

around the world by Auguste Rodin. And lastly, the monument. Statue of liberty, The

Kaaba (Masjid al-Haram), and Great Wall of China. The Statue of Liberty, was a token of

Friendship from the people of the United States and it is also the universal symbol of

democracy. The Kaaba (Masjid al-Haram) is the most sacred site in Islam. Oldest and in
the top of the famous monument in the World; the Great Wall of China was one of the

famous Cultural Monument and also, in was included in the 7 Wonders of the World.

And prior on this, National Heroes are being build by their people a monuments or

Statues. Not just the National Heroes, But also the one’s who contributed a lot, or who

made some historical changes. Honorable and heroic deeds or having a meaningful

memories of them and that thing that they can call their pride to represent their country

or place. It will remind the people about the past and, for the next generation to be Familiar

with the history of something or someone.

Dr. Jose P. Rizal, the National Hero of the Philippines who contributed a lot in

many fields. The one and only author of Noli me Tangere and El Filibusterismo that

enlighten the minds of the Filipinos to rise Rebellion against Spaniards. Dr. Jose P. Rizal

was a Filipino nationalist and a polymath during the Spanish Colonial Period, and a

member of propaganda which are La Solidaridad and La Liga Filipina that advocates

political reforms for the colony under Spain. Also, he is being considered as one of the

greatest heroes of the Philippines and has been recommended to be so honored by an

officially empaneled National Heroes Committee. With regards on this, Filipinos build a

statues and monuments that will remind his memories, and great sacrifices, and for the

next generations to recognized the Philippines National Hero. In relation with this, the

Filipinos were studying the life, deeds, and writings of Dr. Jose P. Rizal. The Philippines,

consistent honoring the National Hero, build different monuments and statues For Dr.

Jose P. Rizal. Where can you find the first ever monument of Dr. Jose P. Rizal in the

world? Is it in Luneta Park? In Spain? People were so confused about it. Many people

where asked, where can you find the first Dr. Jose P. Rizal monument? They are dumb
founded, they did not know where it is. Where can you really find the first Dr. Jose P.

Rizal’s monument? Why is that, people are not aware of it? Because, they are not well

educated or informed about it. In additional, lack of awareness and appreciation for our

national hero.

One of the Monument of Dr. Jose P. Rizal erected in Daet, Camarines Norte. It

was called “Bantayog ni Rizal,” the Camnorteños was celebrating the Bantayog Festival

every year, in honoring for the National Hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal. In the ceremony of

building the Rizal’s monument, “they expressed deep admiration for his genius and

outstanding patriotism as exemplified by his death from the cruel Spaniards. Rizal’s

death, according to their speeches, was among the immediate reasons for the eventual

uprising of the Filipinos,” (Gerona 2009). The monument is finished during December 30,

1898. But, without the leaderships of Lt. Col. Ildefonso Alegre and Lt. Col. Antonio Sanz

of the Republican Army led the construction of the monument, it will not be possible.

Earlier it was dubbed Morga because the right face of the square base contains the

phrase Morga, 1889. The Bantayog of Dr. Jose P. Rizal is named after Antonio de Morga,

he was the author of Sucesos de las Filipinas. Who empress the National Hero, Dr. Jose

P. Rizal. The annotation of the book was being used by Dr. Jose P Rizal to debunk the

Spaniards’ claim about lack of culture as a people then and all the sordid myths and

fallacies against the Filipinos spread by the Spanish authorities.

CHAPTER II

Jose P. Rizal offered his life for his beloved country. To set free the country, and people

from abusive colonizer. He sacrifices his self in exchange for the freedom of his

countrymen. “Dear parents, brothers, sisters: give thanks to God who kept me tranquil

before my death. I die resigned, hoping that with my death they will leave you in peace.

Ah, it is better to die than to live in suffering. Be consoled.” Guerrero (2007). From the

start, he knew and accepted that he is going to die. Rizal fought the Spaniards, not by

using Bolo nor gun, even using his fists, but he fight the colonizer using pen. He uses

wisdom rather than emotions, he uses his gentleness rather than aggressiveness.

According to Pacis, 1979. Without waging war, Rizal contributed to the final defeat of a

great world empire, thus partaking of the highest attribute of a military hero. True to the

tradition of the East, he gave to his country and to others the distillation of his profound

thinking, thus establishing himself as Asian hero. And martyrized for his ideas that could

not be killed with him, he won the highest heroic attribute to all. Everyone has an

obligations to his country. Rizal himself, had accomplish his obligations, he defended his

country over the colonizer, he help his the country and countrymen to rise up. Additionally,

Pacis said that Wenceslao Retana called Rizal a Filipino Christ, and, indeed, he is. Like

Christ, he neither held public office nor led an army, though unlike Christ, whole disciples

actively propagated his doctrines over the small know world, he wrote books. In fine, just

as Christ gave redemption and salvation to mankind, so Rizal, brought redemption and

salvation to his country, perhaps to the colored and colonized races.

Rizal was being compared with other Asians who made a historical contribution in the

history. According to Pacis 1979. Most national heroes of the East were profound thinkers

who abhorred violence. Confucius of China, Rizal of the Philippines, Gandhi of China. And

he also said that Jose Rizal possessed something of the best facet of each group. Like

Napoleon, he helped cause the collapse of an empire; like Gandhi;, he founded a national

philosophy; and like Christ, he died a martyr. Verily, Rizal will always first in the Philippine

National Pantheon and may eventually rise to a high rank among the heroes of humanity.

Rizal died in other to end up the cruelty. We all know that when there is a

misunderstanding, man fix it with fist, aggressiveness and violence. But Rizal, choose to

fight mentally rather than physically. “Confident in the instinctive compulsion of the human

spirit for improvement, Rizal was completely against blood and violence. He so declared

categorically in refusing Bonifacio’s last attempt to rescue him from his Spanish guards. On

board the S. S. España, from Dapitan to Manila, Emilio Jacinto, with some companions

disguised as sailors, made ready to help him escape on a launch. But when Jacinto made

known the plot to Rizal, the patriot declared with finality; “I want neither violence nor Blood.

Let me go on.” Pacis, 1979. Rizal wants evolution not revolution. “In the historical

perspective, Rizal is not only the greatest Filipino: he is also growing in statue as an Asian

hero of liberty and democracy,” Pacis 1979. Additionally, “Rizal was the first in all of Asia

to advocate and introduce ideas that can be called modern democracy and western

liberalism.” Verstraeten 2009. He is not just the National Hero of the Philippines but rather

the Asians and the World.

“Rizal was also the first Filipino to chart a route for his people toward this perceived

national unity. He was the first to depict nationalism as something worth living for. He is
indeed the First Filipino, the quintessence of his people and his race.” Co 2000. Rizal was

considered as a Social thinker, along with Claro Recto, Apolinario Mabini, and Isabelo

Delos Reyes. Who contributed on the society and who thinks about improvements and

positive changes.

Rizal fought the colonizers using pen and he wrote the Noli me Tangere and El

Filibusterismo. Where, he reviled the evildoings and cruelty of the Spanish officers as well

as the priests, and of course, the maltreatment and underestimation. And with that, he,

Jose Rizal was exile at Dapitan for 3 years. After being exiled, he was brought onto

Bagumbayan for the executions. “In a broader sense, however, Spain herself was the

guilty party. In a letter to Blumentritt, Rizal reported that father Faura had told him,

referring to the Noli, that he had not written a novel but had “described the sad state of

our times.” “And now,” Rizal added, “he believes that his God will punish me with death

because I wrote the truth!” Spain was indeed guilty of intolerance, of denying her subjects

the freedom of expression, and of punishing them for the truth rather than for the falsity

of what they told the world. And the penalty for this guilt, to which Rizal was a prominent

contributor, was the final collapse and loss of her overseas empire.” Pacis 1979. He was

punished not by the God, but by the cruel and heartless colonizer, who do not want to be

defected. And the one, who are against on them, will die. Rizal just told the truth, and by

telling the truth, he have been killed by his own countrymen, because it was ordered the

the Spaniards. The Filipinos killed the one who is fighting for their freedom.
‘“Long live Spain and death to traitors!’ But as the last Spaniard gave their ragged

cheer, and the band of the battalion of volunteers struch up, with unconscious irony, that

human rights and constitutional liberties, the Marcha de Cadiz, the quiet crowd of Filipinos

broke through the square, to make sure, said the Spanish correspondent, that the

mythical, the god like Rizal was really dead, or according to others, to snatch away a relic

and keep sake and dip their handkerchiefs on a hero’s blood.” Guerrero 2007. Filipinos

was praising the colonizer the one who brought Filipino’s misery and suffering. While the

one who is saving them, Filipinos choose to betrayed the one who is trying to save as.

And it is then, the start of the revolution between Filipinos and Spaniards. Rizal made

Filipino realized that they should fight for their own country. And also, he taught the

Filipinos’ to have solidarity. “He has lived on in a changing world which he has not

understood and which no longer needs him. Guerrero 2007.”

Also, according to Guerrero again, A third is what we prize virtue more than victory and

sacrifice above success, for Rizal was a “failure”: in the eyes of the world, at the mercy of

an unmerciful enemy. “Redemption” wrote Rizal, “presupposes, virtue; virtue, sacrifices;

sacrifices, love. Rizal’s value for his beloved country has outstanding, and no one can

surpass it. We wanted someone to save us, but not to die because of us. Rizal was a

man of action and works. For the eyes of the world, Rizal has been defeated, for he died,

he fail to kill the colonizers. But he, himself was able to awakened the hearts of his

fellowman. And that is, for us, Filipinos, was not a failure. “We have a national fondness

for tragedy, and the essence of tragedy is that the virtuous man suffers because if his

very virtues. It has also been observed that we commemorate our defeats rather than our

victories…” Guerrero 2007.

“When at their appointed time, they die, we feel, that all of us have died with them, but

also that by their death we have been saved.” Guerrero 2007. Because Rizal died, the

National unity was born. He was an leader, he proved that, died for your own country,

was worth dying for. Fight for the Freedom. Rizal through that if he offers his life, it is the

start of the revolutionary, and many other Filipinos, offers themselves too. “If he had been

them, the first Filipino would have known that he was not the Last.” Guerrero 2007.

When Rizal was not yet dead, he was considered by the Filipinos’ their hero, National

hero. “Rizal is also the first Filipino because he is first in the hearts of the Filipinos. Nations

are known by the heroes, they have. If a people have the government they deserve, they

also have heroes made in their own image and likeness.” Guerrero 2007. Furthermore,

Rizal did not fire a gun nor wave a bolo, he was not an revolutionary officials nor army,

he does not want fame nor attention, he does not even have bad self-intentions nor

ambitions. All he want was freedom, freedom for his country and countrymen. And that

makes him a National hero. “The choice was ours. It was Rizal who lifted up the hearts of

his generations, and who is on shined by the Nation and Republic he made. From this

choice of our national hero a number of conclusions can be drawn.” Guerrero 2007. At

the very start, even he is still alive, he was declared by his fellowman, their first national

hero over other people who has positions, who also, gave their lives. “The most obvious

is that we Filipinos love peace, for we have chosen to magnify a man of peace above the

men of war.” Guerrero 2007. Filipinos’ chooses Rizal over other people who fight, like

Emilio Aguinaldo, General Luna and others. We, Filipinos choose the man of peace rather

than the man of war. Because war cannot be defeat by war itself, but rather than war is

defeated by peace.
According to Guerrero, 2007. Rizal said, Bury me in the earth, put a stone on top,

and a cross. My name, the date of my birth and that of my death. Nothing more. If you

want to fence in my grave, afterwards, you can do so. But no anniversary celebrations! I

prefer Paang Bundok. Rizal’s will before he died. “Jose Rizal had wanted a simple burial

at “Paang Bundok” (today’s Manila North Cemetery), but posterity has not granted him that

wish.” Roda (2017). Although, Rizal wanted a simple burial, people gave him a grand

memorabilia. A monument and statues, it has the largest, grandest, earliest, and also the

oldest. Jose Rizal’s most popular and famous sculptural landmarks in the country. 17

years after the hero died, In Manila, Philippines rosed a 58 hectares land, for Rizal’s

memories. The park was called Luneta. Where, Rizal was executed. Guarded 24 hours

a day, seven times a week by 4 ceremonial marines. The Luneta Park was former

Bagumbayan, valuing by every Filipinos, in giving respect for Rizal. It was the famous

and most The Filipinos did not do what Rizal’s wished for. They build an elegant

remembrance of him. People called it “Motto Stella”. It was build to honor and remember

Rizal’s deeds for upcoming generations.

Luneta maybe the largest and most popular landmark of Dr. Jose Rizal in the

Philippines. But, the world’s tallest Rizal Statues can be found in Sta. Cruz, Laguna.

“TALLEST RIZAL STATUE. A worker is dwarfed by an 8-meter (26-foot) statue of national

hero Jose Rizal erected in Sta. Cruz, Laguna, costing P6 million for this year’s Palarong

Pambansa. Rizal was estimated to stand at 1.57 meters (5’2”). AL

BENAVENTE/CONTRIBUTOR” Cinco (2014). The tallest Rizal statue was unveiled

during the 2014 Palarong Pambansa, because Jose P. Rizal himself, is a sportsman; the

Largest Memorial to Jose Rizal in the World. “In June 2011, the National H Perdon (2016).
While the World’s tallest Rizal monument, can be found on Calamba, Laguna.

Former President Aquino led the unveiling of the said monument. A 22 meters (72 ft.)

Rizal Monument symbolizes 22 languages and dialectics Rizal mastered during his time

such as Spanish, English, German, Japanese, Chinese and others.

And lastly, the largest memorial to Jose Rizal in the world is located in Bayombong

Nueva Vizcaya which was granted with an official historical marker in 2011. In June 2011,

the National Historical Commission of the Philippines unveiled a historical marker in

honour of the country’s national hero and officially accorded the site in Bayombong,

Nueva Vizcaya a recognition as a major memorial to Jose Rizal. The project was

undertaken by the late Rizalist Mahmoud A. Masfour, a Jordanian national married to a

Filipina wife and had the family living in that province” (Perdon, 2016).

Perhaps we could be forgiven by Rizal for not having complied with his wish,” Leon

Ma. Guerrero writes. But, it is not the first monument erected for Dr. Jose P. Rizal honor.

300 kms from Manila's Kilometre Zero marker: at the corner of Magallanes and Justo

Lukban Streets near the Municipal Hall of Daet, Camarines Norte. Where you can find

the first Dr. Jose P. Rizal monument in the Philippines, and in the World. The people

called it “Bantayog ni Rizal” it was build two years after the fallen hero died. According to

the National Institute in Manila, they recently elevated the status of the first ever Rizal

monument in Daet, Camarines Norte into a National monument in a Resolution No. 12

series of 2008 entitled “ Resolution Declaring the Jose Rizal monument in the Municipality

of Daet , Camarines Norte a National Monument .” The announcement regarding the said

declaration was made by the NHI Board Chairman Ambeth R. Ocampo to Daet Mayor

Tito S. Sarion when the latter paid a visit at the NHI on October 2009. According to Orosa
(2013). “Tallado said that the people of Camarines Norte have accorded the national hero

the highest honor, although he had never set foot in the province”. During the

Commemorate of the 117th martyrdom ofnational hero Dr. Jose Rizal, Governor Edgardo

A. Tallado said. The people of Camarines Norte was cheerfully celebrating the Rizal’s

Death, for the reason that, Camnortenos are valuing Rizal’s sacrifices and Deeds, by

reminiscing the memories of Dr. Jose P. Rizal.

Aside from the local statues and monuments of Dr. Jose P. Rizal here in the

Philippines, there is also on different countries. Australia, Spain, Singapore, Hong Kong,

Japan, USA, Florida, and Alaska. Additionally, there are also National Heroes in different

Country. Like, King Naresuan, a Thai National Hero, Yi Sun-shin in Korea, and in Nepal

and New Zealand, we have Edmund Hillary. Jose P. Rizal was also considered as a

Renaissance man, he was an Ophthalmologists, Novelist, sculptor, painter, educator,

farmer historian, playwright, and journalists and others. Jose P. Rizal is treated in the

league of Asian greatest men like Nehru, Gandhi, Tagore and Sun Yat-se. Perdon, (2016)

Why there’s a need to study, Jose P. Rizal? For the reason that, according to

Republic Act no. 1425, also known as the Rizal Law, mandates all educational institutions

in the Philippines to offer courses about Jose Rizal. The full name of the law is An Act to

include in the Curricula of all Public and Private Schools, Colleges and Universities

Courses On the Life, Works and Writing of Jose Rizal, Particularly his Novel Noli Me

Tangere and El Filibusterismo, Authorizing the printing and Distribution thereof, and for

other purposes. The measure is strongly opposed by the Roman Catholic Church in the

Philippines due to the anti-clerical themes in Noli Me Tangere and El FIlibusterismo.

“Largely because of the issue, then Senator Claro M. Recto—the main proponent of the

Rizal Bill—was even dubbed as a communist and an anti-Catholic.” (Manebog 2013).

Verstraeten (2009) Many of the problems during Rizal is time still remain today. At

the start of the 21st centuries, the Philippines faced a was one’s more, but this time it is a

war with no borders neither personal enemies for it is a war against poverty, against

selfishness, against crime, against apathy, against greed, the cancer of the modern

society that Filipinos, must overcome just as Rizal overcome the cancers in his time. The

said cancer was corruption. Nowadays, it is the major problem in our society, there is no

cure nor antidote in this type of illness. And this keeps from keeling the society. Rizal

challenge us to that Filipinos should be serious about fighting inequity, that Filipinos must

help the poor build to have education, good health, and land. The fruits of modernity like

infrastructure and knowledge must be brought to poor areas, rural and urban alike, just

as Rizal did in Dapitan.” Verstraeten 2009. Remember we are responsible for our country,

but our major problem is ourselves. Someone has to fight like Jose Rizal again, someone

should end up this problem, someone should kill the problems in our society. We Filipinos,

should accept and perform that challenge. “With all the forces making the modern world

smaller, it is time again to change one’s way of thinking. It is the time to realize that

Filipinos live in one world, and not two; that the cancers mentioned above are in our

community and wherever we live. It is the responsibility of each and every Filipino to make

their political leaders and aware and recognize that obligation.” Verstraeten 2009

Verstraeten 2009. The more a person reads Rizal’s works, the more he grows in

him, the more he becomes fascinated with Rizal. Rizal died because of his great love for

his country of birth, the Philippines which be called his “partria adorada.” He did not fire a
gun, or wield a bolo, but he was the ‘living soul’ or inspiration of the Philippines Revolution.

His teaching are omnipresent today everywhere in the world, many times in labels or

philosophies of other people.

“Furthermore, Heroes are born but they are also made. Not only must a great man die

at a great historical moment, and die gently, so that the nation feels that it dies with him,

but after his death it is equally important that the veneration of his memory be encouraged,

preached and accepted by a grateful people.” Guerrero (2007). A nation do not need to

sacrifice a beloved hero to make a country realize that they are victims of slavery. As a

Filipino, we don’t need to be thought of how important the freedom really matters. A

justification of this is the death of our hero Jose Mercado Rizal y Alonso Realonda,

because of his death, our nationalism arises that made the Philippines free from the

Spaniards. But in a good and positive effect of his death, led his countrymen to fight for

themselves start a revolution that make a great change to the historical event of our

nation. Now, we should appreciate the sacrifices of Rizal’s life. It is a reminder to us that

soul can be use as a weapon of springing people to just not be a normal individual but to

be a true hero with good will and goals for his land.
