CD-ROM drive: Quad speed
Memory: 32Mb RAM
Processor: Pentium 90 or better

** The PDF files used for these products are also available for viewing and searching on
Windows 3.xx and Power Macintoshes (System 7.0+). However, the additional functionality
provided through Avantext's plug-ins is not available on these platforms.
Introduction

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your purchase of The
Avantext Tech Pub CD. It is our feeling the information being delivered is the most
accurate and timely available and that the software used to deliver this information
is the most user friendly available. We hope your experience is equally rewarding.
The intent of this manual is to familiarize you with the program, so that you
may obtain the information critical to your business with as little effort and interac-
tion as possible. As you read through this manual and begin to utilize the software,
please keep in mind that we appreciate and attempt to implement as many sugges-

Manual Conventions
In this manual, several conventions are utilized in order to clarify the intent of
the text. For example, any bold text indicates a button or menu item that you can
click on with the mouse. The following lists the conventions used within this manu-
al:

Convention Explanation
BOLD Lettering Clickable item (i.e. Keyboard Button, Screen Button, etc.)
Lettering in "QUOTES" Something to look for on screen
ITALIC Lettering Something you should type
Using the Program

Maneuvering Through the Program


While the program is a relatively simple program to learn, a general under-
standing of Windows operation (using a mouse, scroll bars, drop down lists,
menus, etc.) is necessary. This manual is meant to give you general instructions
on how to use the software. If you need more instruction on how to use the
PDF portion of the software please refer to the Reader Online Guide in the Help
menu at the top of the screen.

Hyperlinks
Within the program there are several different types of hyperlinks or color
underlined text.
Red Links = Red links are links within the same document you are viewing.
When these are clicked you will be presented with a page that the selected infor-
mation is referenced on. The item that the link refers to will blink for a short
period of time.
Green Links = Green links are similar to Red links but link to documents out-
side of the current document.
Document Views
There are several different views available for viewing the documents.
They are: Page Only: Choosing this view will only display the page of the
document you are viewing.
Bookmarks and Page: Choosing this view will display a column of clickable book-
marks on the left side of the screen and the page of the selected document on
the right side.

Clicking here will display a column of bookmarks


and the associated page of the document.

Clicking on any
entry in this column
will display the
associated page of
the document in the
opposite window.
Thumbnails and Page: Choosing this view will display a column of thumbnails
(small clickable page previews) on the left and the selected thumbnail will be
shown on the right side.

Double Click on
any thumbnail
to bring up the
associated page
in the opposite
window.
Keyword Searching
You can use the search feature to search for part of a word, a complete
word, or multiple words in the current document that you are viewing. Click on
the icon for the Adobe Acrobat Search up in the menu bar, this will then open up
the search screen.

Type the word(s)


that you wish to
search for in this
box, then click on
Search.

In the search screen type in the word(s) that you wish to search for. To help you
search for words that you aren't sure of, you can select some or all of the following
options:
Word Stemming - checking this box will allow the search engine to find all
words that contain similar spelling. For example, if you searched for the
word stick, you would also get results on words like sticky or sticker.
Thesaurus - checking this box will allow the search engine to use a the-
saurus to find words with similar meanings.
Sounds Like - checking this box will allow the search engine to find words
that sound like the one you are searching on.
Match Case - checking this box will only find words that match the exact
case size of the word(s) being searched for.
Proximity - When you use the Proximity option, the closer the matches are
within a document, the higher the relevancy ranking of that document.

Installation Instructions
To install the TechPubs CD onto your system, follow these
instructions:
Turn on your computer and make sure you start Windows 95/98.

Insert the TechPubs CD into your CD-ROM drive.


Double-click on the My Computer icon on your Windows desktop.
Next, double click on your CD-ROM icon. Then, double click on
Install.exe.

This will then bring up the installation screen appear. Follow all
on-screen instructions.

Starting the Software


To start the software, follow these instructions:
Click on the Start button in the lower left-hand corner of your
desktop (on the Windows 95/98 taskbar).

Move the mouse to the entry for “Programs” and then to the
“Avantext” entry. Next move the mouse to the entry for the
desired “TechPub CD” and then click on it.
Click on the desired manufacturer's “TechPub CD” menu item to
start the program.
