PROGRAM NOTES
on
"Eternal Father, Strong to Save" is a hymn traditionally associated with seafarers and, in particular, the maritime armed services. Composed in 1860-61 by William

Whiting and John B. Dykes, the hymn was inspired by the dangers of the sea described in Psalm 107. It became popular in the late 1800s through the United
States Navy and Britain’s Royal Navy.

This arrangement by Robert W. Smith was premiered in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, as part of the 75th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor and the gathering of
heroes from around the world in December of 2016. Beginning with the toll of the ships bell in tribute to those that that lost their lives on that fateful day, the

beautiful hymn follows in a solemn and reverent setting. The ship’s bell returns during the final amen and tolls into the distance reminding us of the incredible
sacrifices of our “Greatest Generation.”

The ship’s bell (or chimes) should be placed for optimum audio presence. If a true ship’s bell is used, please stage the instrument for visual impact as well.

The hymn should be as legato as possible. Depending upon the ensemble and performance setting, feel free to interpret as rubato as you feel appropriate. Strive
for ensemble balance throughout. I have scored the hymn to be as warm and lush as possible. Please note the dynamic shaping as the hymn concludes with the

IV-1 “amen” harmonic resolution. The ship’s bell should toll resolutely into the distance.

This setting of “Eternal Father, Strong To Save” was written as a prelude to “The Greatest Generation,” a salute to heroes that served during World War II. You
may wish to consider programming both the hymn and “The Greatest Generation” as part of your patriotic program. In addition, the hymn serves as a wonderful

warm up chorale for use throughout the year.
