DRUMS HEADS, EQUIPMENT, MALLETS
Changing marching heads:
- Snare at least once a season (stretch to every other season if non
competitive)
- Bass at least once a season (stretch to every other season if non
competitive)
- Tenors - buy lots of tenor heads and change them when needed! no
exceptions! tenors need to be tuned high! don't let tenor heads get wet!

Recommendation for middle school drumline equipment:


- Yamaha Power Lite or Pearl Competitor Series

Concert Bass Drum:


- I prefer a lower pitched batter head with a high pitched resonant head,
with a black towel triangle-clipped to batter head to control resonance

Pitches for tuning:


- Hand out a timpani range chart from Google image search

Drumset heads for jazz band:


- I prefer coated heads (Remo Ambassador or equivalent) with a
Powerstroke 3 coated on the bass drum
The Percussionists Toolbox (hand out)

School owned set – performance mallets:


Bass – legato, staccato, rollers
Xylo – hard acrylic, med/hard, wood, Becker “Blues”
Glock/crotale – brass and acrylic
Marimba/vibe – range of soft to hard, cord or yarn.
Timpani – general, staccato, ultra staccato
Sticks – general, sizzle, wire brushes
Triangle beaters!!!

Middle school sticks and mallets:


- Steve Weiss Music Best Seller Stick Pack #1

Beginning band mallets:


- Make sure there is an instrument for every student. Only do mallets for
the first semester - make them understand they must succeed at mallets
before starting other percussion. Beginning band books are fine for
starting out. Mark Wessels Fresh Approach to Mallet Percussion is a
good supplement or class book. Treat percussion as a specialty
instrument, just like oboe, bassoon, and french horn - only for smart
kids! Not a dumping ground!
OTHER STUFF….

• Timpani tuning, intervals, basic problems/issues


• What to do with percussionists during a "wind-focused" rehearsal:
• - Make sure EVERY percussionist is engaged. Double, triple, quadruple mallet parts.
Double a snare part. If no mallet parts, use the oboe part. Copy a simple snare part on
tambourine. For MPA - just cut the extra players or have a rotation system.
