Growth Experiment Through Different Genres of Music: A Science Investigatory Project

This document summarizes previous research on the effect of different genres of music on plant growth. Studies have found that playing music, especially classical and Indian raga music, can increase the growth of plants like balsam plants by 20-60% by stimulating cell movement through sound vibrations. While some scientists agree music may speed seed germination and growth, others are skeptical that observed effects may simply be due to increased care of plants when music is played. The current study aims to test the effects of rock, classical and pop music genres on the growth of mung bean plants over one week.

CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Introduction

Music is one of the best things that people have created. It makes us one and sometimes it

gives people a large impact on their lives. It helps people to come up with their traumatic

experiences, depression, anxiety and other things that can serve as an escape. It somehow helps to

boost their moods. As plants have lives too, the researchers aim to put music as a part of plant

growth. Music surrounds us, music is everywhere. Music can’t just help humans, but it is also

helpful for plants. With the help of its radiation, it affects the plant’s growth and the process of the

plant’s growth is more faster and easy compared to the usual process which is watering the plants

daily and letting the sun hit on them.

Based on our researches, believe it or not, numerous studies have indicated that playing

music for plants really does promotes faster, healthier growth. When it comes to understanding the

effects of music on plant growth, it appears that it isn’t so much about the sounds of music, but

more to do with the vibrations created by the sound waves. In simple terms, the vibrations produce

movement the plant cells, which stimulates the plants to produce more nutrients. The researchers

believe that we can’t live without music because it is already part of our lives. Music is important

in our lives in many reasons. Music has helped to create certain emotions whether happy, sad,

calm, angry, scared, etc. Music has enhanced and enriched every person’s creativity. Without

music, life would get really boring real quick. It has to do with every living things in this world

including the plants. Music is indeed a powerful instrument for everything and everybody. It is

able to speed up seed germination and help us grow healthier plants.

Background of the Study

Plants are slowly getting destroyed by humans in our generation. People can’t deny the fact

that they’re mostly attracted to artificial sight seeing like tall buildings, amusement parks, resorts

and many more. They are out of control, deforesting is normal for them just to build their

businesses, the don’t care about nature as long as they can reach their goals and success. As people

have been brutal with nature nowadays, The researchers aim to educate and give knowledge

specially to those teens out there because they are the hope of the future.

People can actually add fun when it comes to planting just like music. It is one of the reason

why everyone seems to be lively and happy. It’s like music can touch souls and motivate people.

If it has this beneficial effects on humans, it is possible for plants too. Plants react to the attitude

they are exposed to, just like human beings, they are sensitive to external environment such as

light, cold, heat and noise. A cool fact is that a lot of people believe that if you talk to plants they

will grow faster, this is true. Because we release carbon dioxide plants get more of this than others

because the air is headed directly towards them. Different experiments confirmed that music does

affect plant growth. Sound is transmitted in the form of wave that travels through air (its medium).

The wave causes the particle in this medium to vibrate. For example the radio, the sound wave

will create vibration that will then causes your ear drum to vibrate. This pressure energy will be

converted to electrical energy for the brain to translate into music. The experiments done by

scientists, have shown that some plants grew more quickly after being exposed to musical

stimulation. Most scientists will agree that seeds that are exposed to music will actually be able to

germinate faster.
Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study is to show everyone that music can help in plant growth. It aims

to answer the following questions:

1.) Which of the 3 different genres of music can make the mung beans grow

faster in 1 week?

2.) What does the vibration of sounds do to help with the plant growth?

3.) Is it possible that it will grow 1 inch in 1 week? Why?

Hypothesis

These are the answers in the questions in the Statement of the problem:

1.) Music don’t make any changes to the plants.

2.) The usual procedure of growing plants is much more better and less hassle than having

music for its growth.

3.) The advantages of music to people is not the same as it goes with plants.

Significance of the Study

The researchers would be able to share the knowledge and the result that they have come up

in this study which is entitled “Different genres of music such as Rock, Classical and Pop as a help

in plant growth” to the following:

To the society, considering that biology plays an important role in Science and Technology today.

To the students, to provide something new and fun ways in planting and introduce them to the

beauty of biology and botany.

To the teachers, they can introduce and give knowledge for everybody and make them aware how

science definitely works on everything and everybody.

To the future researchers, they can easily innovate and discover a lot more concerning sound

vibrations and botany that plays an important role in our lives.

Scope and Delimitation

We use everyday materials to test this experiment. The materials are 3 seeds, specifically

mung beans, a large speaker and 3 different genres of music that we are going to play while

isolating each plant on a small yet very silent place. In order to do this successfully, each plant is

isolated in a small room, and then we play the first genre of music, with the help of our speaker, it

would

Definition of Terms

This section provides the definition of terms that was used in the whole study, especially

the scientific terms that could be found in the Review of Related Literature and Study.

Ambience is the mood or feeling of a particular place. Ambience is another word for atmosphere

in the sense of the mood a place or setting has.

Articulation is the act or manner of articulating sounds. It pertains to giving clear and effective

utterance to their grievances and to utter distinctly: to unite by as if by joints.

Mung Beans is a common type of plant that we also use as food.

Pitch is a musical tone that is determined by the frequency of the waves producing it.

Considered as the highness and lowness of sound, also, a standard frequency for tuning

instruments.

Rhythm is repeated patterns of sound. Regular rise and fall in the flow of sounds in speech. It is

a movement or activity in which some action or element recurs regularly.

Sonic is relating to sounds, sound waves or speed of sounds.

Timbre is the quality of sound made by a particular voice or musical instrument. The distinctive

quality given to a sound by its overtones.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED STUDIES AND LITERATURE

The chapter provides an overview of previous research on knowledge sharing. It introduces

the framework for the case study. That comprises the main focus of the research/described in this

investigative project.

Review of Related Studies

According to Judeh Mahfuz 2015, If plant responded to how it was nurtured and have

several sensory perceptions, will it then respond to soundwaves and vibrations created from

musical sounds?

Several studies were conducted to find the effect of music on plant growth and Dr. T.C.

Singh carried out one of these earlier research

Dr. T.C. Singh (1962), head of the botany department at Annamalia University, India,

experimented with the effect of musical sounds on the growth rate of plants and found that balsam

plants accelerated by 20% in height in 72% in biomass when exposed to music. He initially

experimented with classical music. Later, he experimented with raga music (type of music that

improvises on a set of rhythms and notes) played on flute, violin, harmonium and reenea, an Indian

Instrument; and found to have similar effects.

He repeated his experiment with field crops using a particular type of raga played through

a gramophone and loudspeakers. The size of crops increase to between 25 to 60% above the

regional average.

According to Nedushan Behrouz Ahmadi 2015, the effect music on plant growth is still

a debatable subject among scientists and experts. Many experiments have been performed by both

scientists and students to prove that plants can grow better and faster when they are provided with

musical stimulation.

Music actually consists of soundwaves that travel through the air at varying frequencies

and finally reaching our eardrums to be recognized as sound and music.

When the plant is exposed to the same music, it also receives the same sound waves and

could in fact be receiving some form of stimuli that we are yet able to understand. The experiments

done by scientists have shown that some plants grew more quickly after being exposed to musical

stimulation. Most scientists will agree that seeds that are exposed to music will actually be able to

germinate faster.

There are also those who are of the opinion that plants that are exposed to music may in

fact be receiving better care and attention, and therefore grow more quickly. When someone speaks

or sings to plants, they may possibly be supplying the plant with additional carbon dioxide that the

plants will need to grow faster. The attached shows that playing classical music to plants makes

them grow more quickly.

According to Lerardi Enzo 2015, Studies conducted by the University of Wisconsin in

Madison (USA) have shown that milk production in cows who hear symphonic music increases

of 7.5%.
A farmer in Illinois (USA) pitched two greenhouses that were in the same conditions of

fertility, humidity and temperature, the same seeds; in a greenhouse applied speakers who spread

music 24 hours a 24. After a while he realized that it was widespread in the greenhouse where the

music was the corn sprouted more quickly, the weight of the corn was higher and that the quotient

of soil fertility was increased; the plants closer to the speakers were ruined as a result of sound

vibration.

The success was so great that now in Canada are using the music for crops and it was

observed that the sound vibrations are able to destroy a particular microorganism parasite that

attacks the corn.

Related Literature

According to Meg Michelle 2018, Plants also seem to listen to the vibrations of one

another. Plants that are near other plants tend to grow faster and healthier than those grown in

isolation. Research suggests that plants may “talk” to one another via vibrations, and these

communications let a plant know when it is safe to grow. Other research indicates that vibration

from sounds such as music can turn genes on and off, indicating that plants may "listen" to their

surroundings to know when to express certain genes. If scientists can gain a better understanding

of this phenomenon, it is likely that sounds such as music could be used to promote growth.

The exact cause of music's effect on plants is unclear. It is thought that plants may have

"mechanoreceptors" that respond to pressure. Sound waves are made up of compressed air

molecules. In humans, mechanoreceptors in the ears are able to detect and distinguish sound waves
in the form of pressure as each wave strikes the inner ear. If plants have similar receptors, they too

could respond to the changes in sound waves, such as those from music.
CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

Subject of the Study

The entire research study will focus on the behavior of plants in certain types of

environment. These includes outdoor and indoor settings. This is to test if, like people, plants

would react to certain stimuli.

This experiment will work on 4 same type of plant per trial. The first one will be exposed

to pop music, the second one is to classical music, the third one is to rock music and the last one

will be left as is. The entire samples will be placed on the same environment with the same

conditions to make sure that the terms will be met by entire samples and that the only difference

would be the music stimulus.

To gain consistency, same tests will be done to 2 more pairs of different type of plants

compared to the ones used for the first experiment.

The plants that will be used for the experiments are as follows:

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

The following stated below shows the presentation of data which includes the trials during

the study and the information gathered from the survey that was conducted by the researchers.

Presentation of Data

Table 1: Trial and Error

Number of Experiments Process and Outcome

In the first trial, the researchers planted the

mung beans in each of the 4 pots. The

Trial 1
designated music for every plant was played

right after it was planted and it lasted for 1

hour every day.

As for the second trial, the researchers

decided to increase the volume of each music

Trial 2
on the plant and see what happens. They

observed if the higher sound waves would

make a difference on the plant’s growth.

In the last trial, same procedure was done

and the plants have grown from time to time as

Trial 3
the music is playing. It became much more

reproductive than the usual growing of plant.

The entire trials are the same in process but only differ on the levels of sound of each music

thus, it can be shown that the higher sound waves can add a great help in terms of growing plants.

The researchers decided to increase the volume of classical music. It is loud but calm for the plants

since classical music is considered as a relaxing one.

An hour of playing a certain music to the plants can make them grow half inch.
CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Summary

Everyone would think that this study is weird and ridiculous to do. On the other hand, using this

kind of method will not affect us in any way. In short there’s nothing to lose if everyone will try.

This is the new and sole method of growing plants. The researchers believe that this could help

humans who are learning and doing experiments regarding botany. The researchers also believe

that with this study, it would help many people especially aspiring scientists. As this generation’s

slowly forgetting about botany, the researchers aim to introduce it with new methods and fun

things to do with plants. Just like in this bio music study, it is appealing for everybody especially

for youth since they’re the ones who are interested on doing something bizarre. It is shown in the

study that everyone can put into a whole new level.
