Marketing Strategy
Caterpillar introduced the 797 Mining Truck in 1998. Developed in response to mining companies
seeking a means to reduce cost per tonne in large-scale mining operations, the 797B is sized to
work efficiently with large loading tools. The updated model features an increase in nominal
payload from 326 to 345 tonnes (360 to 380+ U.S. tons) with a standard flat floor body. To further
optimize payload, Caterpillar’s Mine Specific Design (MSD) Team can customise a body to
specifically match body design to the loading tool and material being hauled.
What’s New?
524B HD Engine An increase in engine power from 2,540 to 2,648 kW (3,400 to 3,550
horsepower) allows the “B” model to maintain the same performance
capabilities as the 797A and reduce the hauling cost per tonne by 3 to 5
percent. The 797B uses a 3524B High Displacement engine that is EPA Tier
1 non-road emissions certified.
Gross Machine The 797B is the largest of the extensive Caterpillar off-highway truck line.
Operating Weight The 797B has a design operating weight of 623,690 kg (1,375,000 lbs) –
about 14,000 kg (30,000lb) more than the previous model
59/80R63 Tyres Contributing to the increased weight are the new, higher capacity 59/80R63
tyres, which allow for the increase in gross machine operating weight. The
new tyres have a rated load of 104 tonnes (115 tons) compared to the 102
tonnes (112 tons) capacity of the former 58/80R63 tyres. The 59/80R63 is
available from both Michelin and Bridgestone.
Braking and To ensure productive and reliable performance at the greater GMW, braking
Steering Capacity and steering capacity have been increased on the 797B. Parking brake
capacity has also been increased to accommodate the greater weight. Larger
steering cylinders, new design steering arm and T-bar castings, and increased
accumulator capacity ensure responsive and reliable steering on rough haul
roads. The 797B steering and braking systems were designed, tested and
certified to meet or exceed stringent ISO, SAE and British Columbia
certification requirements. The steering and braking of the 797B is certified
within Caterpillar’s 10/10/20 payload management guidelines.
Structures The 797B frame has been redesigned to provide additional strength and
weight reduction. The frame is well suited to be the backbone of the 797B
for many years of operation.
Serviceability The 797 was designed for easy accessibility to major components to reduce
service time and maximise availability. Since its introduction, Caterpillar
continues to improve serviceability with many new serviceability
enhancements included with the 797B model.
The sole manufacturing source for the 797B Mining Truck will be Decatur plant in Illinois, U.S.A.
The serial number prefix for the 797B is “JSM”.
