followings:
Inventory of Activities
Prepare an inventory of all activities in the Organization
Pay due consideration to :
-- activities carried out in respective areas of operation
-- activities carried out by sub-contracted personnel
-- other activities over which organization have no direct control
-- a single activity may have multiple aspects
Example :
Planning, production, maintenance, dispatch, transportation of final product fr
plant to the customer etc.
Steps Involved
- Identify all activities with Environmental Impacts and occupational health
and safety risks.
- Prioritize them
- Set standard operating criteria for all activities with Significant Impacts

Category Name Abbreviation Explanation Back
Air Pollution is the accumulation in the atmosphere of substances, that in sufficient concentrations, endanger human health or
produce other measured effects on living matter and other materials. Major pollutants are CO, HC, NOx, SOx, CL2, HCL, SPM.
EMS Air Pollution AP
The major sources of these pollutants are power generation, furnace, incinerator, flare, various industrial process's vent/stack,
fugitive emissions, vehicular transport inside complex, etc.
Water Pollution is the introduction of chemical, physical, or biological materials into land water or sea water. Water Pollution may
be caused by conventional pollutants or non-conventional pollutants. Conventional pollutants are generally associated with
direct input of (mainly human) waste products, i.e. Sewage/Sanitary waste. Non-conventional pollutants include dissolved and
particulate forms of metals, both toxic & non-toxic, and degradable & persistant organic carbon compounds discharged into
EMS Water Pollution WP water as a byproduct of industry or as an integral part of marketable products. Non-conventional pollutants vary from biologically
inert materials such as clay and iron residues to the most toxic materials such as halogenated hydrocarbons (DDT, Kepone,
Mirex & Polychlorinated biphenyles-PCB).The later group may produce damage ranging from acute biological effects to chronic
sub lethal effcets that may go undetected for years.Chronic low level pollutants are proving to be the most difficult to correct and
abate because of their ubiquitous nature and chemical stability.
Land contamination is the degradation of earth's land surface through misuse of soil by (a) mineral exploitation (e.g. raw salt for
CA plant) ; (b) industrial waste dumping ;(c) indiscriminate disposal of non-industrial wastes. This also includes spillage or
EMS Land Contamination LC Back
leakage of industrial wastes like organic & inorganic substances / chemicals from chemical & petrochemical industries and
sewage from sewarage system.
Thermal Pollution is the discharge of waste heat via energy dessipation into cooling water and subsequently into nearby water
ways. The major sources of thermal pollution are (i) cooling operations, (ii) hot condensate blowdown, etc. associated with
industry. The discharge of heated water into a water body often causes ecological imbalance , sometimes resulting in major fish
EMS Thermal Pollution TP
kills near the discharge source . The increased temperature accelerates chemical/biological processes, and decreses the ability
to hold dissolved oxygen. Thus rapid and dramatic changes are observed in biological community near the vicinity of thermal
discharge .
Radiation pollution is any form of ionizing or non-ionising radiation that results from industrial activities. The radiation results
EMS Radiation Pollution RP from nucleonic guages, radiography, etc. Total dose limit recommended by ICRP (for industrial worker) is 20 mSv per year. Sv
(Sievert) is unit of 'dose of radiation'. 1 Sv = 1 Joule per kg of human body.
Noise is simply a sound , but it is pollution when the effect of sound become undesirable. Noise pollution may affect badely the
peace of life. The various ways in which noise affect people adversely are : 1) Effect on sleep (at a level of 63 to 83 db) ; 2)
EMS Noise Pollution NP Effect on hearing (prolonged or continuous exposure to noise level above 100 db) ; 3) Effect on communication (70 db is
considered very noisy , maximum accepted limit of noise is 55 db.) ; 4) Effect on mental & physical health (prolonged or
continuous noise level in excess of 100 db).
EMS Resource Wastage RW Resource wastage is the wastage of resources including natural resources . This can be measured in terms of rupees.
Resource depletion is the indiscriminate or excessive usage of natural resources like water, raw salt (used in CA plant), semirich
EMS Resource Depletion RD
gas, Naphtha, etc. This can also be measured in terms of rupees.
Occupational Health is the identification, evaluation, and control of all the factors or stresses arising in and from the workplace,
OHSAS Occupational Health OH
which may cause sickness, impaired health or significant discomfort and inefficiency amongst the workers.
OHSAS Occupational Safety OS Occupational Safety is the freedom from unacceptable risk or harm.
Equipment damage is the damage caused to the equipment or the equipment being destroyed by accidents like crushing
OHSAS Equipment Damage ED denting cracking straining. The items such as jars, tubes, boxes, clothing, wires, cans, vehicles, guard rails, tables, machines,
fixtures, tires, spindles, frames, and walls can be considered under equipment damage.
Property damage is the damage caused to the property or the property being destroyed by accidents like crushing denting
OHSAS Property Damage PD cracking straining. The items such as doors, windows, counters, columns, floors, building and walls can be considered under
property damage.
Condition Back

N Normal Condition Normal Operating Conditions are those which exist as a result of routine operations according to normal operating procedure
Abnormal Operating Condition are those conditions whicch exists as a non-routine operations or unforeseen happenings. Breakdowns and start &
AB Abnormal Condition
stop situations are considered as abnormal condition for the purpose of this ERIMS .
E Emergency Accidents, gas leak, fire, explosion, etc. are considered potential emergency situations.

Sr. No. Explanation
Register for environmental impacts and OHS risks is a dynamic document that is reviewed
under following considerations to determine the effectiveness of controls established and to
make any additions, modification or deletions to the entries of the register. Based on review
appropriate changes are made primarily in the register as well as the controls identified
therein:
1 Whenever there is a change in plant & equipment
2 Whenever there is a change in process or technology
3 Whenever there is a change in product (type, nature or specifications)
