DESCRIPTIVE ANALYSIS &

VISUALIZATION OF REAL
DATA:
A STUDY ON FOOD
PREFERNCES & RESTAURANTS
IN BANGALORE
BANGALORE

The city of Bangalore is a fine mix of work and leisure. It is the hub of where you can
witness the vibrant youth of the India. With several pubs and restaurants, architectural
marvels and natural getaways, Bangalore can be a traveller’s delight.
Bangalore is the capital of Karnataka and is the 5th largest city in India and 3rd most
populous city. The city is popularly known as "The Silicon Valley of India" and is the
nation's leading IT employer and exporter. Bangalore has always seen a very diverse
population, especially since modern times.
It is a multi-cultural city permeating class, religion and language. Even though it is a
cosmopolitan city, Bangalore holds on to its traditional features.
Besides being known for its applaudable weather, Bangalore offers varied food
delicacies.
The people residing in this city have started to indulge more in food prepared at restaurants
than at eating at home. This can be stated due to the increase demand of restaurants, food
trucks and innumerable vendors, selling various eatable items at roadside.
The food service delivery organizations- like Zomato and Swiggy, aid in providing prepared
meals at reasonable discounts. Specially, Zomato not only provides home delivery service,
but helps an individual know about any restaurant in the area.
For example: An individual can search for a restaurant on Zomato and get an insight about its
meal menu, its online booking facility, average cost for two, rating and reviews. In this
analysis, we will be taking into consideration the data recorded in Zomato and use it to get
insight into the food habits of the people residing in a region.
DATASET OF ZOMATO

Zomato is an Indian restaurant discovery and food delivery forum founded in 2008. It claims
to have hit the 21 million monthly order run in India in September, 2018. Zomato is the
market leader in the food delivery space in India. Initially, Zomato was present in 15 cities in
India, which has moved up to 38 cities and soon aims at covering 100 cities in the near future.
While, Zomato has its competitor like Swiggy and Uber Eats, it has still managed to hold a
place in the market.
It is important to note that the value of the orders across platforms for Zomato is around
Rs 190- 200. However, Zomato claims that its order value is higher at around Rs 320 due to a
premium set of users owing to their reviews business and Zomato Gold, which keeps their
average order value higher than the competition.
Keeping aside the profit/loss or market share of Zomato, we cannot disagree with the fact that
it does offer more knowledge and insight about the restaurants than that of its counterparts
like Swiggy and Uber Eats. A user of the Zomato application can analyse a restaurant or the
food on the basis of restaurant rate, dish most liked, approximate cost for 2 people and attain
information about the restaurant location, menu, contact and also, reserve a table if needed.
By the information provided about a restaurant on Zomato, one can figure out the most suited
restaurant for himself. Being a food lover, I was curious and thus, decided to know more
about the restaurants in the city.
The data set collected represents the restaurants that avail Zomato service for their food
delivery items in Banashankari, Bangalore.
We will use the data provided by Zomato to infer the food habits and restaurant prefernces of
the people residing in Bangalore.
Data Gathering:

The dataset provided by Zomato was used to gather information on the type of food people
order, restaurant they prefer to visit, online delivery and table booking facilities offered by
various food joints. Surprisingly, many factors contribute to a restaurant’s rating as well as
increasing demand of a particular cuisine in a particular area. The analysis, will help an
individual infer which food item is most eaten in a city or which restaurant would deliver the
food online or which would food joint would be pocket friendly.
The dataset is taken from Kaggle.
The dataset contains the following features:
1. name: This feature contains the name of the restaurant
2. online_order: whether online ordering is available in the restaurant or not
3. book_table : table book option available or not
4. rate : contains the overall rating of the restaurant out of 5
5. votes : contains total number of upvotes for the restaurant
6. rest_type: restaurant type
7. dish_liked: dishes people liked in the restaurant
8. cuisines: food styles, separated by comma
9. approx_cost (for two people): contains the approximate cost of meal for two people
10. listed_in(type): type of meal
11. listed_in(city): contains the neighbourhood in which the restaurant is located
Analysis 1:

From the above chart, it can be concluded that around 71.24% of the restaurants in the city
offer Online Order facility.
This data, can help us in analysing the rising demand of food being ordered online.
Calculation: (446/626) * 100 = 71.24%
Here, 446 is the number of restaurants that have online order facility out of 626 restaurants
that were considered.
Almost 30% of the restaurants in the city did not provide the service of online booking.
Since most restaurants have this facility of online delivery, we can infer that most people in
the city utilise the service of online food delivery irrespective of the charges applied.
Analysis 2:

As per the chart above, we see that booking facility is provided by only 7.98% of the
restaurants.
Calculation: (584/626) *100 = 7.98 % (Approx. 8%)
Here, almost 92% of the restaurants, do not provide any booking facility. The facility to book
table does not have much effect on the restaurant’s sale.
This implies that most restaurants are willing to accept adhoc customer arrival and do not rely
upon any prior bookings.
Also, it can be concluded that people in the city prefer to eat at their homes or prefer fast food.
Analysis 3:

From the above chart, we can conclude that most people prefer inhouse dining, that is:
ordering food at home. Almost, 71.08 % of the restaurants provide Delivery service. Next, in
demand service type is Dine-Out, 11.02% restaurants are of this type. Buffet service type
restaurants are least, with only 1.11%.
Calculation:
Delivery Service: (445/626) * 100 = 71.08%
Dine Out: (69/626) * 100 = 11.02%
Buffet Service: (7/626) * 100 = 1.11%
Dessert: (59/626) * 100 = 9.42%
The highest percentage of Delivery service demand justifies that rising demand of
foodservice forums like Zomato and Swiggy. Sweet shops hold almost 10% of the market ,
implying that people in the city prefer to consume desserts.
Analysis 4:

Out of 626 restaurants, mentioned in the dataset, we are able to conclude that 96.32% of
restaurants are located in the Banashankari region.
Banashankari, can be said to have numerable restaurants offering various cuisines. Almost,
97% of the restaurants are there in this city.
Calculation: (603/626) * 100 = 97%
The rest, 3% of the restaurants did not have location mentioned. Yet, considering 603
restaurants present in a particular location itself, high demand of restaurants, implies that
people highly rely on food prepared at the joints and cook less at home.
Analysis 5:

Most of the restaurants are rated in the range of 3.6 to 3.9. The majority of restaurants are
rated 3.8(out of 5). This means that most of the restaurants in the city are liked by the citizens
and hence rated above average.
There are very few restaurants with very high rating like 4.9 or 4.8.
This shows that due to high rise in the number of restaurants, the competition is at its best, as
every restaurant is trying to excel in quality and services to increase the number of customers,
and hence enhance profit.
Analysis 6:

We find that Quick Bites, 37.69%, is the most popular cuisine among others. Maximum
restaurant type offers quick bite food for consumption.
Calculation:
Quick Bites: (236/626) * 100 = 37.69%
Casual Dining: (133/626) * 100 = 21.24%
Café: (65/626) * 100 = 10.33%
Quick Bites restaurants are more tha
This can be related to the charts earlier that presented, less reservation of table and more
online delivery.
It can be inferred that people of the city choose to have snacks n small meals, and often order
in online.
Analysis 7:

We see that Brew Meister, rated 4.1, is the most expensive restaurant in the city, where
approximate cost for two people is Rs 1500.
Most restaurants are in the range of Rs 750-900 average for two people.
It can be stated that there is thick competition among the restaurants falling in the range
Rs 750-900. Number of reasonable restaurants are more than the number expensive
restaurants. The city majorly has restaurants that are pocket friendly. The rate of a restaurant
has major impact on the number of customers visiting. More people visiting reasonable
restaurants can be a reason behind high count of these type of food joints
Restaurants in the range of Rs 1200-1500 have very minimal competition and are less in
count.
Analysis 8:

We see that the ratings for restaurants having Online Order facility are higher as compared to
the restaurant ratings that do not allow Online Order.
Majority of restaurants are rated in the range of 3.7 to 4.0 (out of 5) for those providing
online order.
For those restaurants not providing online order facility, majority of the rating lies in the
range of 3.5 to 3.6.
It can thus be inferred that; online order plays a significant role in a restaurant’s rating.
Analysis 9:

We clearly see that the facility of booking table does have an impact on a restaurants rating.
For restaurants not providing table booking facility, it is mostly rated 3.7 whereas for
restaurants providing table booking facility, the maximum rating is 4.6 and there are hardly
ratings below 3.6.
Thus, we can say that the restaurants that are high rated, provide table booking facility.
Analysis 10:

We find from the chart that people in the city prefer eating Churros from San Churro Café.
This is followed by Pasta from Kirthi’s Biryani. The other dishes from other food joints are
almost equally liked.
If anyone wants to know eat the most popular dish of the city, they can head away to San
Churros.
This analysis can help a tourist get insight regarding the most popular and appreciated food
joints.
Conclusion
The analysis of the dataset, revealed facts that could benefit both the customer and the
restaurant. By reading this data, customers can decide upon which dish is most indulged in
the city as well as which restaurant would be reasonable or expensive.
Moreover, the restaurants could read the relationship between their ratings and facilities
offered and improve upon them. It is a win scenario for everyone.
In general, by these representations of restaurants and food information, we are able to see
large amounts of data in clear, cohesive ways – and draw conclusions from that information.
And since it’s significantly faster to analyse information in graphical format, we can address
problems or answer questions in a more adequate manner.
Here, a count of 626 data also started to make sense when presented graphically; we can
recognize parameters that are highly correlated. Some of the correlations will be obvious, but
others won’t. Identifying those relationships helps us focus on areas most likely to influence
our most important goals.
Such elaborate information gives us an edge over the competition, and ultimately affect the
bottom line. It’s easy to spot outliers that affect product quality or customer churn, and
address issues before they become bigger problems.
