EXERCISE 1 : OPENING A BAKERY SHOP

1 If you have ever ever dreamt of opening a bakery, your chances of


success may be high. Baked goods and bakeries are among the
fastest-growing industries for small businesses.
2 One of the first decisions you have to make is to select the kind of
bakery you want to open. It can be either online, counter service, specialty

service or the growing trend now is the sit down and dine shop. Next, write
out a thorough business plan. This includes details on who will manage the
business, how you plan to market your bakery and how you will finance
your business. It can be through loans, savings or outside investors.
3 To find a good location for your bakery, visit the city’s official website 10
for demographic data, which can help you select a location that has many
potential customers. You can also conduct a market survey to determine
what potential clients desire in a bakery.
4 Before selling your first item, you must check the requirements needed
to operate a food business. It can be done by referring to your state’s health

services department. This is necessary in order to get a license to start up a
business. Do some research on suppliers of the common food items you
need. You may be able to obtain some stock at a discounted price from the
grocery store. However, most materials will be more economical if
purchased from wholesalers even if you have them delivered.

5 Set per-item prices that will cover you material costs inclusive of the
labour you put into it. Visit competitor bakeries or their websites and figure
out how much they charge. Do not set prices that vary greatly from what
clients expect. Bear in mind that you need to be original. Do not be a carbon
copy of your competitors. Be the best, the first, or the only one baking the
kind of treats you make.
