The web has become an opportunity for the marketers to add value to products or services. The

phenomenal growth and rising of the popularity of the internet and the World Wide Web has

become a key to attract more consumers and businesses to engage the benefits of Electronic

Commerce (E-commerce). As defined by business dictionary, E-commerce is the business

conducted with the use of computers, telephones, fax machines, barcode readers, credit cards,

automated teller machines (ATM) or other electronic appliances (whether using the internet)

without the exchange of paper-based documents. It includes activities such as procurement, order

entry, transaction processing, payment, authentication and non-repudiation, inventory control,

order fulfillment, and customer support. When a buyer pays with a bank card swiped through a

magnetic-stripe-reader, he or she is participating in e-commerce. Ecommerce allows has allowed

firms to establish a market presence, or to enhance an existing already larger market position, by

taking advantage of allowing an inexpensive cheaper and more efficient distribution chain for their

products or services. According to (Burleson, 2015), a website must be simple and focused site to

succeed. One that is easy to build, maintenance-free, low cost, trustworthy, and a powerful traffic

builder and customer-converter. Having the right tool and the right product alone doesn’t ensure the

success of the website. To be effective, the Website must be designed with the target audience as

foremost consideration. Website designers must balance design considerations and capabilities

with client objectives and the consumer’s level of understanding in the modern technology (Geissler,

2011).

In order to be competitive in the current competitive environment is essential for a company to

consider the necessity to enter the online market and into the digital business environment. Online

marketplaces operate on the simple revenue sharing business model. The service providers

(Sellers) and service seekers (Buyers) visit the online marketplace to sell and buy

products/services respectively and the owner of the marketplace earn revenue by charging a
commission on each purchase made through the online marketplace. Based on the article entitled

“Online Marketplaces that rule E-commerce” Online shopping is one of the biggest areas that

have grown tremendously with the emergence of online marketplace business model. This

transformation has not only benefited the buyers but also the small and medium sellers who

needed an opportunity to expand their business.

Local Literature

It is stated in an article from The Philippine Star dated August 7, 2012 by Louella D. Desiderio

entitled “Businesses urged to use Internet to push products”. It shows that businesses are advised

to use the Internet for promoting their products and services as more consumers are going online

to research before making purchases. Companies should consider using online advertisements for

the products and services they offer as more and more people are using the Internet to research

goods they plan to buy before making the purchase. It also states that in the Philippines, the study

showed that around 70 percent of consumers first make a research of their purchases online even

if they purchase offline. The availability of the goods and services with the click of a mouse is

changing in global setting. This new marketing strategy will not only benefit those big companies

but also the small businesses who cannot afford to advertise their product.

As Filipinos entered the 21st century, local e-commerce transaction reached 1 billion pesos. It shows

that there’s at least 1 billion transaction sales growth annually. If this trend continues, figures can

reach up to 20 billion pesos as more business conduct online transactions. If significant economic

growth takes place in the next ten years, these estimates may even double or triple (Toral, 2004)

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become and will continue to be an integral

part of the day-to-day life of every Filipino across all levels of our society. The occurrence of
communication technology around the world necessitates that government get on a cohesive and

coordinated strategy on how to prepare its citizens to survive, live and thrive in a digital world. (The

Philippine Digital Strategy Transformation 2.0: Digital Empowered Nation 2011) The main objective

of the paper is to have a competitive society where everyone has a reliable, affordable and secure

information access in the Philippines.
