DME - 1 Assignment - II Problem Sheet (2019-20)

This document contains 10 problems related to designing and analyzing riveted and welded joints. The problems involve calculating joint efficiencies, determining rivet sizes and pitches, designing longitudinal and circumferential joints for boilers and pressure vessels, and sizing welds for brackets and cantilever plates. The document provides necessary dimensions, material properties, and load information to solve each problem.

Assignment –II problem sheet

1. (a) Explain the failures of riveted joints with neat sketches

(b) A double riveted double cover butt joint in plates 20 mm thick is made
with 25 mm diameter rivets at 100 mm pitch. The permissible stresses are
σt = 150MPa, σc = 180 MPa and τ = 130 MPa. Find the efficiency of the
joint taking the strength of rivet in double shear as twice than that of single
shear
2. Two plates of 11 mm thickness each are to be joined by means of a single
riveted double strap butt joint. Determine the rivet diameter, rivet pitch, strap
thickness and efficiency of the joint. Take the working stress in tension and
shearing as 80 MPa and 60 MPa respectively.

3. (a) Explain the procedure for designing a longitudinal joint for a boiler
(b)It is required to design the longitudinal rivet joint for a boiler of inner
diameter 1.5m. The steam pressure in the boiler is 2 MPa. The joint is triple
riveted double cover plate butt joint of equal width. The efficiency of the
joint is 80%. Assume the rivets in double shear are 1.875 times stronger than
in single shear. The allowable stresses in shear and crushing of rivets are 60
MPa and 120 MPa respectively. Tensile stress for material of plate = 80
MPa.

4. A cylindrical pressure vessel with 1000 mm inner diameter is subjected to

internal steam pressure of 1.5 MPa. The permissible stresses for the cylinder
plate and the rivets in tension, shear and compression are 80, 60 and 120
MPa respectively. The efficiency of longitudinal joint is taken as 82 %.
Design the circumferential lap joint and calculate i) Thickness of the plate,
ii) Diameter of the rivets, iii)Number of rivets iv)Pitch of rivets.

5. (a) Describe the procedure for designing a lozenge joint

(b) Two lengths of mild steel tie rods having width 200mm and thickness 12
mm are to be connected by means of a butt joint with double cover plates.
Design the joint if the permissible stresses are 80 MPa in tension, 65 MPa in
shear and 160 MPa in crushing.

6. Two mild steel tie bars for a bridge are to be joined by means of a lap joint.
The thickness of the bar is 12 mm and carries a load of 150 KN. Design the
joint taking the allowable stresses as 100MPa in tension, 160MPa in
compression and 80MPa in shear.
7. (a) What is an eccentric riveted joint?
Explain the method adopted for designing
such a joint
(b) The bracket as shown in below figure is
to carry a load of 45 KN. Determine the size
of the rivet if the shear stress is not to
exceed 40 MPa. Assume all rivets of the
same size.

8. A bracket is riveted to a column by 6 rivets of equal

size as shown in Fig. It carries a load of 100 KN at a
distance of 250 mm from the column. If the
maximum shear stress in the rivet is limited to 63
MPa, find the diameter of the rivet.

9. (a) What do you understand by the term welded joint?

How it differs from riveted joint?
(b)A bracket carrying a load of 15 kN is to be welded
as shown in Fig. Find the size of weld required if
the allowable shear stress is not to exceed 80 MPa.

10. A rectangular steel plate is welded as a

cantilever to a vertical column and supports a
single concentrated load P, as shown in
below figure. Determine the weld size if
shear stress in the same is not to exceed 140
MPa.
