Sarvajanik College of Engineering and Technology: An Open Ended Project " Discuss Two Case Study For Counter Current

This document discusses a case study on counter current leaching and rate recovery of solvent vapors. It presents a general flowsheet for leaching or washing operations involving a solid and introduces the concepts of solvent and solution balances for calculating the coordinates of a hypothetical mixture point M. It also establishes the relationship between effluent flows from each stage of a multistage counter current leaching process. Three students, Tailor Kashyap, Thesiya Ravi, and Moradiya Akash from Sarvajanik College of Engineering and Technology submitted this open ended project to their professors Vaishali Umrigar and Shireen Singh in fulfillment of their Bachelor of Chemical Engineering degree in the academic year 2019.

ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION
COUNTER CURRENT LEACHING

 A general flowsheet for either leaching or washing is shown in Fig.

 Operation must necessarily be continuous for steady-state conditions to Prevail,
although leaching according to the Shanks system will approach the steady state after a
large number of cycles have been worked through.
 In the flowsheet shown, it is assumed that solid B is insoluble and is not lost in the
clear solution.

A Solvent balance gives,

F + RNP+1 = R1 + ENP = M
And a solution ( A + C ) balance is..
FyF + RNP+1 * XNP+1 = R1*X1 + ENP* YNP = MyM
M represents the hypothetical B-free mixture obtained by mixing solids to be leached
and leaching solvent. The operating diagram for the plant. The coordinates of point M
are
B
NM =
F + RNP+1

FyF + RNP+1 * xNP+1

yM =
F + RNP+1
The points E, and R. representing the effluents from the cascade, must lic on a line
passing through M. and E will be on the practical equilibrium curve,
F – R1 = ENP – RNP+1 = ΔR.
Similarly the solution balance for any number of stages represented by
F – R1 = E3 – R4 = ΔR
∆R represents the constant difference in flow E - R (usually a negative quan
tity) between cach stage.
