Signpost 1: contrasts & 
contradictions  
A character says or does something that is 
opposite of his or her previous actions or 
natural tendency.  
Finding Nemo - Shark scene  

Signpost 2: Aha Moment 


A character has an ​epiphany*​. 
(​epiphany​: the moment when you truly 
understand something for the first time)  
 
 

Toy Story - Buzz finds out he's a toy scene  

Signpost 3: 
Tough Questions 
When the questions a character asks are 
difficult and reveal his or her inner struggles.  
Mulan - Reflection scene 

 
Signpost 4: 
Words of the Wiser 
Insightful advice given to the main character 
that might change the character forever.  

Lion King - Past Can Hurt Scene

Something is repeated many times should 
make the reader wonder why and analyze the
