Folk Dance: JOTA CAMBIOHANA

The Philippine Jota was among the most popular dances during the Spanish Colonial period in the
Philippines. Jota Cambiohana is a Spanish inspired dance originated from Consolacion, Cebu. It
is a Low Land Christian Dance and was originally performed on social gatherings like weddings
and parties. The dance also shows the norm of the locals of Cebu where female dancers portray
modesty and gracefulness. These dance is a combination of Spanish and Filipino dance steps and
music

This dance greatly reflects the culture of Consolacion, Cebu where it shows their means of
transportation which is the iconic and popular “Jeepney”. The word “Kambyo” or “Cambio” is a
Spanish word meaning “gear”. In local Cebuano dialect this means “pagbalhin”, “mag-turnohay”,
“pag-irog”.

Costume and Props


Female wears Maria Clara with stiff “panhuelo”. Male wears “Barong tagalog” with trousers and
a “salakot”.
