Process of attaining US Citizenship

Ways to attain US Citizenship:

a. Naturalization – A process in which a non-US citizen voluntarily becomes an American Citizen.


The naturalization process:
a. Be at least 18 years old at the time of filing the Application for Naturalization
b. Be a lawfully admitted permanent resident of the United States
c. At the time of filing the application, have been a permanent resident in the United
States for at least 5 years – green card (lawful permanent residences) or for at least 3
years if you meet all eligibility requirements to file as a spouse of a US Citizen
d. Have demonstrated continuous permanent residences
e. Have demonstrated physical presence
f. Have lived within the State or USCIS District for at least 3 months prior to filing
g. Have demonstrated good moral character
h. Demonstrate an attachment to the principles and ideals of the US Constitution
i. Demonstrate an ability to read, write, speak, and understand basic English
j. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of US history, government, and civic principles
k. Take an oath of allegiance to the US
l. Receive a Certificate of Naturalization
Certificate of Citizenship and Naturalization are proof of US Citizenship.
How to lose US Citizenship:
1. Run for public office in a foreign country
2. Enter military service in a foreign country
3. Intentionally acquire citizenship in a foreign country except if you acquire it through
marriage to a foreign national; you may become a dual national instead
4. Commit an act of treason against the US
