The document discusses elements of ECDIS simulator training including vessel position, understanding chart data formats and types, chart quality and accuracy, and chart organization. It covers reviewing vessel position interface methods and symbols, examining position information, and determining fixes. It defines vector and raster chart data formats, explains the difference between them and ENC to SENC conversion. It also addresses chart updating methods, tracking manual updates, and factors that influence chart data accuracy like surveying and shifting hazards. Finally, it discusses organizing electronic charts, loading chart data automatically or manually, and the differences between chart cells and layers.

ECDIS Simulator Course (Operation Level)
Elements Of ECDIS (cont.)
Capt. Eslam Mostafa
Integrated Simulator Complex 1-Vessel Position
• Review interface methods.
a) Mouse , trackball and device buttons.
b) keyboard and hotkeys c) use of ERBL on the display
• Review display of vessel’s position.
a) shift the vessel on the display
b) vessel’s symbols c) vessel’s motion vectors • Examine position information in the display panels.
a) Current, tidal height, sounding
b) route & vessels position c) position relative to next WP as per route schedule
• Determine a position fix on the ECDIS chart
display panel.
a) manually draw and move bearing lines (LOPs)
b) Manually mark position on the display 2-Understanding chart data • ECDIS : A navigation information system which , with adequate back up arrangements , can be accepted as complying with the up-to-date chart required by V/19 & V/27 SOLAS 1974.
• ECS : specified in ISO 19379 as follows:
A Navigation information system that electronically displays vessel position and relevant nautical chart data and information from an ECS database on a display screen , but doesn’t meet all the IMO requirements for ECDIS and id not intended to satisfy the SOLAS requirements. Vector & Raster Charts Data Formats
A vector chart is a digital database of all
objects (points, lines, depths, areas etc.) represented in several layers on a chart Difference between Vector & Raster Graphics Vector and Raster Charts ENC-to-SENC
The ECDIS converts each ENC from S57 ENC
format into an internal format called SENC, a process to optimize chart display. SENC delivery is an alternative method to the standard distribution and use of official ENC data. Users are able to directly receive SENC, a conversion which otherwise would have to happen inside the ECDIS. Types of Updates
Automatic Method
Semi Automatic method
Manual Method Manual Update • What is manual update sources ?
• How manual up date look like ?
• Updating is made by means of a special graphic editor
capable of creating & editing objects on the active user charts whose display is superimposed on the electronic chart without clearing the latter.
• So you can insert an object but what about deleting ?
• How can I track the previous manual updates ?
• Only information stored as objects with corresponding to database will be displayed. (SENC)
• Charts data selected for display.
3-Chart quality & accuracy
• Chart data accuracy depends on :
- Survey &hydrographic data. - Shifting of buoys. - Coverage & completeness of data.
• ECDIS problems with different datum's :
- different systems for positioning . - different geodetic coordinates systems.
• The important of having your ENC up to date
for safe navigation. • Dealing with the computer monitor displays 4- Chart Organization • Before charts was folios in drawers now how can I organize my electronic charts ( missing cells , update & new base )
• Loading of ECDIS data :
- Automatically from available chart data for vessel’s
position or cursor location. - Manually by cell name from directory.
