Automated Chicken Egg Incubator Using Arduino

This capstone project describes the development of an automated chicken egg incubator using Arduino. The incubator aims to keep the temperature and humidity at defined values to successfully incubate chicken eggs and hatch chicks. Key objectives are to design an affordable incubator that constantly measures temperature and humidity, and tests its efficiency. The incubator uses sensors to control temperature and humidity, a fan for air circulation, a heater to maintain temperature, and an egg turner powered by a motor to rotate the eggs every eight hours. The scope is limited to the described functions and power requirements, and there are risks of damaging embryos or breaking eggs during turning.

• Introduction

The human kind had used eggs of animal as one of the sources of food, but as

the time passed the human abilities to survive improved resulting in an explosion of

population around the globe, that outburst resulted in sustenance becoming a

challenge. But as they say the need is the drive behind invention.

Chicken breeders usually control and monitor their chicken eggs incubator

machine manually and periodically to ensure the hatching process run well, it causes

an inefficient time and energy. In order to avoid that, chicken eggs incubator

machine is made with modern technology and make the duties of chicken farmer

easier.

Accrding to Napoleon E. Guerin,invented the first egg incubator in the year of

1843; he received the patent for his creation in the city of New York (No. 3,019). The

patent described a "mode of distributing steam heat, purifying air, etc." for hatching

chicken by artificial heat.

• Purpose and Description

The purpose of the study is to make an Arduino-controlled incubator for

chicken's eggs that keep the temperature and humidity at defined values, so that the

eggs are incubated and the chicks finally hatch after some days. This study helps

provide a machine that will increase the scale in egg production process.

It might as well be used to incubate other things than chicken's egg like other

kinds of eggs.

• Objectives of the Study

General Objective

The main objective of the study is to develop an automated chicken egg

incubator using Arduino. In this project we will be design and construct an incubator.

For incubator project few parameters are needs to be control. First of all, we need an
insulated box. Inside of this box we need to control few parameters. We need to

control temperature for which we need a temperature sensor. A humidity sensor is

used to control humidity. For Air circulation we need a small Fan. We also need a

heater to maintain the incubator temperature.

We are Using Arduino Uno to control all these sensors and all the Circuits of

the incubator.

Egg turner is also very important to prevent the eggs mortality. For egg turner

a large container tray is needed to hold the eggs. The egg turner is further connected

to the DC gear motor which control its turning after every eight hours.

Specific Objectives:

• to develop an egg incubator that constantly measures the temperature and

humidity.

• to design and fabricate an affordable automated egg incubator.

• to test the incubator and determine its efficiency.

• to evaluate the develop system in terms of:

3.1 Functionality;

3.2 Reliability;

3.3 Efficiency and;

3.4 Usability;

• Scope and Limitation

The following states what the prototype can do and cannot do as for the

functionalities. The scope of the study includes the details that the prototype

encompasses and the limitation of the study involves the constraints of the

prototype.
Scope

Design a system and hardware for egg incubator with automatic controlled of

the temperature and humidity.

The following list includes the functionalities of the prototype:

• Temperature Control

• Humidity Control

• Fan Monitoring

• Egg Turner

Limitation

The incubator requires power source to work. In most rural and remote areas,

reliable source of power is a major challenge.

It has a high risk of damaging the embryo and also it can encourage eggs

breaking especially during egg turning.
