Malla Mallareddy College of Engineering

This document appears to be an exam for a Mechanics of Solids course taken by mechanical engineering students. It contains two parts - Part A with 8 short answer questions testing knowledge, and Part B with 5 numerical problems to solve. The questions cover topics like bending stress equations, shear stress distribution, shaft design, stress on inclined planes, thin shell equations, maximum principal stress theory, and failure theories.

MID-II EXAMINATION

BRANCH&YEAR: MECH&II MARKS: 20M

SECTION: A/B DATE:21/11/19AN
SUBJECT: MECHANICS OF SOLIDS DURATION:90min

PART-A
Answer the following questions. 5*2=10M
1. Explain the assumptions in the theory of simple bending? (K)
2. Define the shear stress? (K)
3. Illustrate a circular shaft of 50mm diameter is required to transmit torque from
one shaft to another. Find the safe torque, which the shaft can transmit, if the shear
stress is not to exceed 40 M.Pa? (A)
4. Write and derive the stresses equations in a thin cylindrical shell? (C)
5. Write the methods and sign conventions for the stresses on an oblique section of
a body? (C)
6. Explain about the maximum principal stress theory? (K)
7. Define the principal plane and principal stress? (K)
8. Define and derive the thin spherical shell equation? (K)
PART-B

Answer any two questions. 2*5=10M

1. Extract the bending stress equation? (U)

2. Sketch and derive the distribution of shearing stress over a rectangular section?
( (A)
3. Illustrate a solid shaft of 120mm diameter is required to transmit 200kw at 100
r.p.m. if the angle of twist not to exceed 20. Find the length of the shaft. Take
C=90G.Pa? (A)
4. IllustrateA cylindrical vessel 2 m long and500mm in diameter with 10mm thick
plates is subjected to an internal pressure of 3 M.pa. Calculate the change in
volume of the vessel. Take E=200 G.Pa and poison’s ratio=0.3 for the vessel
material. (A)
5. Illustrate a plane element in a body is subjected to a tensile stress of 100 M.Pa
accompanied by a clockwise shear stress of 25M.Pa. Find the normal and shear
stress on a plane inclined at an angle of 20 0 with the tensile stress and the
maximum shear stress on the plane? (A)

6.Explain about the theories of failures? (K)
