Sharif College of Engineeng & Technology: Power Electronics Lab Reports (Fall'19)

This document summarizes an experiment on modeling a definite time overcurrent relay using SimPowerSystems in Matlab. The objectives were to coordinate the definite time overcurrent relay. An introduction provided details on overcurrent relays, including that they protect against excessive currents from short circuits. A definite time overcurrent relay operates if the actuating overcurrent persists for a preset time delay. The lab task involved creating a subsystem for the overcurrent relay, setting parameters, including the relays in a power system model, and observing the output. The conclusion was that definite time overcurrent relays are used to coordinate with other protections and have less sensitivity to prevent operating during load inrush currents.

Experiment No: 4

Objectives:
The Coordination of Definite Time over current relay by utilizing SimPowerSystems
in Matlab.

Introduction:
 Over current relay:
Overcurrent protection protects against excessive currents or currents beyond the
acceptable current ratings, which are resulting from short circuits, ground faults and
overload conditions. Overcurrent protection protects electrical power systems
against excessive currents , which are caused by short circuits, ground faults, etc.
Overcurrent relays can be used to protect practically any power system elements,
i.e. transmission lines, transformers, generators, or motors. Overcurrent includes
short-circuit protection, and short circuits can be:
1. Phase faults
2. Earth faults
3. Winding fault

 DTOC relay:
Definite Time Overcurrent Relay, there is a fixed intentional user settable operating
time delay Td. The relay operates if the actuating quantity persists at least for the
pre-set time delay. Since the relay operates if the actuating quantity (here
overcurrent) persists for definite time, hence the prefix Definite Time is added in the
name of overcurrent relay. Let the overcurrent setting of Definite Time Overcurrent
Relay is 2000 A and time delay is Td. If 2000 A current flows for time Td, the relay
will operate to change its output contact status. This is shown in figure above
The actual interpretation is that the overcurrent in the protected circuit must
remain for 200 ms for Definite Time Overcurrent Relay to operate. If the
overcurrent only exists for say 190 ms, the relay will not operate.

Lab Task
Procedure
Step 1) Create a subsystem for the over current relay.

Step 2) Set the required parameters for the components

Step 3) Create our system which contains two subsystems or relays and observe its
behavior.

Step 4) Include both the subsystems for the over current relay in the power system
block to study the effects
Output for Simple power system

Steady state results

Conclusion:
The Definite time overcurrent relay used to co-ordinate over other definite time, or
instantaneous protection. Generally they have less sensitive (higher pickup) to
prevent operating for load inrush. Generally faster operating time.
