Comments On Crash Barrier

The document reviews the design of a crash barrier and identifies 9 issues: 1) The formula used to calculate Xulim is incorrect. 2) The calculation of actual Xu is incorrect as it uses the required Ast instead of the provided Ast. 3) The formula shown for Mulim assumes a parabolic stress distribution but forces are calculated using a rectangular stress block. 4) Anchorage lengths for reinforcement bars were not provided.

Review of design of crash barrier

Design:

1. Xulim has been calculated incorrectly in ULS check as the Formula used for Xulimas
700*deff/(700+0.87fy) as per ultimate strains for concrete(0.0035) and reinforcement
steel(0.002+0.87fy/Es) for balanced section.
700
The correct formula for Xulim is 𝑋𝑢𝑙𝑖𝑚 = fy *deff
1100+0.87
Es

2. Actual Xu has been computed incorrectly, which is based on required Ast instead of
provided Ast. The formula used in goal seek is incorrect.

3. Formula for Mulim shown in the design note is as per parabolic stress distribution.
However the compressive forces are calculated based on rectangular stress block and
Mulim has been calculated as per parabolic stress block. Kindly review and correct.

4. Provide calculations for anchorage length of bars in crash barrier.

5. Please correct introduction text in Serviceability check.

6. Maximum allowable compressive stress in concrete for quasi combination is not

specifies in design Notes.

7. In SLS Calculations, neutral axis has been calculated by equating maximum

permissible tensile and maximum permissible compressive forces under ultimate loads.
Cracked moment of inertia is then calculated based on this neutral axis which is
conceptually incorrect. Further, the strain is calculated by equation, M/Z/Ec assuming
beam in elastic limit. This formula is true only for elastic region, under service load,
provided that neutral axis and cracked moment of inertia is calculated on geometrical
basis. Kindly review and correct.
8. Notational size of member is unclear.
9. Calculation for creep coefficient in Crack width check (Quasi permanent Load
combinations) shall be computed using formulas provided in clause A2.5 of IRC: 112-
2011.
