3) Types of Ecosystem - Sept23

The document discusses several types of ecosystems: 1) Forest ecosystems include tropical rainforests, temperate deciduous forests, and taiga forests. Key features are the canopy, forest floor, and soil. Functions include watershed protection, atmospheric regulation, and erosion control. 2) Desert ecosystems are classified by climate and features. Common types are sand and rocky deserts. Features that organisms must adapt to include temperature extremes and low rainfall. 3) Grassland ecosystems are dominated by grasses and occur where trees cannot grow. Tropical and temperate grasslands are described. 4) Aquatic ecosystems include oceans, rivers, lakes, and wetlands. Factors like temperature, flow,

Tropical Evergreen Forest

Evergreen’ because there is no definite time for trees to shed their

leaves, flowering and fruition. As such these forests appear green all
the year round.

The common animals found in these forests are elephants, monkey,

lemur and deer. The one-horned rhinoceros are found in the jungles
of Assam and West Bengal. Besides these animals, plenty of birds,
bats, sloth, scorpions and snails are also found in these jungles.
Tropical Deciduous Forest

Also called the monsoon forests, these are the most

widespread forests in India. The term ‘Deciduous’ refers to the
ability of some plants to lose their leaves annually. They are
spread over regions which receive rainfall between 70 and 200
cm.

In these forests, the common animals found are lion, tiger, pig,
deer and elephant. A huge variety of birds, lizards, snakes, and
tortoises are also found here. [Currently, India is the only
country on Earth confirmed to have both lions and tigers in its
wilderness.
Temperate Evergreen Forest

Evergreen’ because there is no definite time for trees to

shed their leaves, flowering and fruition. As such these
forests appear green all the year round.

The common animals found in these forests are

elephants, monkey, lemur and deer. The one-horned
rhinoceros are found in the jungles of Assam and West
Bengal. Besides these animals, plenty of birds, bats,
sloth, scorpions and snails are also found in these
jungles.
Temperate Deciduous Forest
Temperate deciduous or temperate broad-leaf forests are a variety of temperate
forest dominated by trees that lose their leaves each year. They are found in
areas with warm moist summers and cool winters. The six major areas of this
forest type occur in the Northern Hemisphere: North America, East Asia,Central
and Western Europe (except Brittany, Cornwall, Wales, Ireland and western
Scotland), Denmark, southern Sweden and southern Norway. Smaller areas occur
in Australasia and southern South America. Examples of typical trees in the
Northern Hemisphere's deciduous forests include oak, maple, beech and elm,
while in the Southern Hemisphere, trees of the genus Nothofagus dominate this
type of forest. The diversity of tree species is higher in regions where the winter
is milder, and also in mountainous regions that provide an array of soil types and
microclimates.[4] The largest intact temperate deciduous forest in the world is
protected inside of the six-million-acre Adirondack Park in Upstate New York.
Taiga Forest

Taiga is the world's largest land biome, making up 29% of the world's forest
cover. The largest areas are located in Russia and Canada. The taiga is the
terrestrial biome with the lowest annual average temperatures after the
tundra and permanent ice caps. Extreme winter minimums in the northern
taiga are typically lower than those of the tundra. The lowest reliably
recorded temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere were recorded in the
taiga of northeastern Russia.

GRASSLAND ECOSYSTEM
• Dominated by a nearly continuous cover of grasses
• Occur in environments conducive to the growth of
this plant cover but not to that of taller plants,
particularly trees and shrubs.
• The factors preventing establishment of such taller,
woody vegetation are varied
TYPES OF GRASSLAND ECOSYSTEM
• Tropical Grassland
• grasslands which generally lie between the belts of
tropical forest and desert
• Occur in the same regions as savannas
• Temperate Grassland
• grasslands which generally lie between deserts and temperate
forests
• temperate grasslands may have a scattering of shrubs or trees that
blurs their boundaries when they occur adjacent to scrublands or
temperate forests
