Lesson Plan Form

The teacher will teach students how to solve quadratic equations through a dance lesson involving the "quad solve." Students will learn the three methods - factoring, completing the square, and the quadratic formula - through a rap song and dance movements. They will practice applying the methods by creating their own rap verses, performing dance moves, and solving sample equations. Finally, students will demonstrate their understanding by teaching one of the methods to their peers through song and dance.

Math Standards –
3 a. Factor a quadratic equation to reveal the zeroes of the function it
defines.

4. Solve quadratic equations in one variable

b. Solve quadratic equations by inspection (e.g., for x2 = 49), taking
square roots, completing the square, the quadratic formula, and
factoring, as appropriate to the initial form of the equation. Recognize
when the quadratic formula gives complex solutions and write them as a
± bi for real numbers a and

Dance Standards
1.0 Students perceive and respond, using the elements of dance. They
demonstrate movement skills, process sensory information, and
describe movement, using vocabulary of dance.
5.1 Identify and compare how learning habits acquired from dance can
be applied to the study of other school subjects (e.g. memorizing,
researching, practicing)
I. DESCRIPTION OF CONTENT AND CONTENT TYPE (Fact, Procedure,
Concept, or Principle):

Teacher will teach solving quadratic equations through dance, demonstration, and
lecture to 8th grade students.

II. LEARNING OUTCOME (Objective):

Students will successfully understand, identify, explain, and demonstrate how to

solve quadratic equations as evidenced by class participation and group activity.

III. CURRICULUM CONNECTION (How this lesson fits into unit plan):

Introduction to solving quadratic equations and preparation for algebra 2.

IV. INSTRUCTION

A)ENGAGEMENT (Motivational Activity):

Teacher will demonstrate the quad hand movement.
Teacher will pose the question; do you know the quad solve? (strategies for
quadratic equations).
Students will answer the question by raising their hands.

Math and Dance (The quad solve):

B) INSTRUCTIONAL SEQUENCE (Teaching Methodology with Student

Activities):

Build conceptual knowledge of solving quadratic equations relating to dance:

● Teacher will introduce the concept of the lesson, solving quadratic equations, and
stating the three methods.
● Teacher will write the three methods of solving quadratic equations, and state the goal
of finding x.

1. Factoring
2. Completing the square
3. Quadratic Formula

Teaching Relation of Dance and Math: (I DO)

● Teacher will explain factoring to solve quadratic equations and demonstrate the quad
solve.
● Teacher will explain completing the square to solve quadratic equations and
demonstrate the quad solve rap song.
● Teacher will explain the quadratic formula to solve quadratic equations using the quad
solve rap song.
● Teacher will demonstrate the quad solve by modeling the flex.
● Teacher will model the quad solve dance while emphasizing the concept of solving
quadratic equations.

Teaching Application of quadratic equations to dance: (WE DO)

Teacher will teach how to apply the three strategies to dance through class activity.
· Teacher will demonstrate the quad solve hand movement (flex).
· Teacher will instruct students to follow the movement while singing, do the
quad solve.
· Teacher will divide the lesson into 3 parts to explain the three strategies
through the quad solve rap song.
· Teacher will teach the students the lyrics of each section and the students will
sing/dance along.
· Teacher will ask the students to move freely and dance during the quad dance
while flexing during the lyrics, do the quad dance.

C) APPLICATION ACTIVITY (Practice and/or Reflection): (YOU DO)

· Teacher will review and practice the lesson with students by
completing the following activity.
· Teacher will divide the class into groups of 4.
· Teacher will ask the students to create an additional rap verse that
summarizes the rules of solving quadratic equations that demonstrates
comprehension.
· Teacher will walk around the room and check for understanding from
all students.
· Teacher will ask the students to perform their song verse while doing
dance movements and the quad solve flex.

Apply meaning: (Real Life Connection)

· Teacher will provide a visual real-world connection using a ball.
o Teacher will throw ball into the air then set a quadratic equation and
ask the students to figure out the time it will arrive.

Demonstration/Identification: (Lesson Summary for Assessment)

● Teacher will ask for three student volunteers
● Teacher will divide class into three groups.
● Students will choose one of the three strategies that their group will be using to solve
quadratic equations.
● Teacher will inform student leaders that they will be using the quad solve song and
dance movements to lead their group.
● Students will solve quadratic equations using their chosen method while freely dancing
and using the song verses to show understanding.

Discussions of learning: (Classroom/Small Group Discussion for Review)

● Teacher will ask students to form a fish bowl and begin a discussion about the new
knowledge acquired.
● Teacher will use a soft ball as the talking piece that will be thrown around ensuring
everyone has a turn.
● Teacher will ask the students the importance of knowing the three strategies.
