Pipefitting

Level 2 - International Competence in Engineering – Construction (Red Card)

OCCUPATION PROFILE – PIPEFITTER

The occupation of Pipefitter consists of the positioning, assembly, fabrication, maintenance

and repairs of piping systems. With a sound knowledge, understanding and application of
techniques and equipment the pipefitter is also able to assist in the design and specification
of new piping systems and their layout. This includes providing technical advice on material
selection, pipe stress analysis, piping material line classes, standard and speciality piping
components, and pressure and piping support systems.

Engineering construction industry piping systems may carry water, steam, chemicals or fuel
which may be used in cooling, heating, lubricating and other processes. The piping can vary
in bore and material type dependent upon the fluid it is designed to carry and the operating
pressures of these systems. These system requirements also determine the method of
jointing required within the piping system and the Pipefitter must ensure the integrity of joints
that are made. Methods of jointing can range from threaded and bolted solutions to, where
required, a more permanent welded joint.

INTERNATIONAL COMPETENCE IN ENGINEERING-CONSTRUCTION (ICE) SCHEME

ICE Validates knowledge and skills against ECITB Standards ensuring people working in the
engineering-construction industries are technically competent. ICE recognises the
importance of continuous training/assessment through the ICE renewal process.

The International Competence in Engineering - Construction (ICE Level 2) Framework

defines the skills and job knowledge required to work in an Engineering-Construction
environment.

ICE Level 2
At ECITB ICE level 2 the individual is typically tasked with routine pipefitting activities such
as;

• Shape engineering construction pipework components using hand tools.

• Support the assembly of engineering construction pipework components to meet
specification.
• Support the positioning and installation of engineering construction pipework.

All activities at this level will be in accordance with the approved procedures, test
specifications, maintenance schedules and all other relevant international/approved
standards. Additionally all tasking and subsequent activities will be performed under the
direct supervision of a suitably qualified and experienced person.

COMPONENTS OF ICE LEVEL 2 – PIPEFITTING

To achieve the ICE Level 2 Award candidates must successfully complete the following:

• ECITB International Health and Safety Passport (IHSP) Foundation

• A minimum of 2 Pipefitting Skill Specific Technical Tests (Level 2)
• A minimum of 2 Skill Specific Technical Tests (Level 2)

ECITB International Health and Safety Passport (IHSP) - Foundation

The aims of the ECITB IHSP scheme are to ensure that all site personnel worldwide have
reached a recognised level of Health and Safety knowledge and awareness and to enable
them to work on site more safely, reducing the health and safety risk to themselves and
others around them.

To ensure individuals reach the required level of Health and Safety knowledge, all delegates
on each of the courses MUST successfully complete the necessary training programme,
which in all cases includes at least one examination. Successful candidates will then be
rewarded by being issued their unique IHSP photographic passport, transferable worldwide.

Pipefitting Skill Specific Technical Tests (Level 2)

To achieve the ICE Level 2 award candidates must successfully complete a Minimum of 2 of
the Pipefitting Skill Specific Technical Tests listed on page 3.

Skill Specific Technical Tests (Level 2)

To achieve the ICE Level 2 award candidates must successfully complete a Minimum of 2
Skill Specific Technical Tests listed on pages 3, 4 and 5.

Relevant ECITB TECHNICAL TRAINING UNITS are available for candidates to attain skills
required to undertake the ECITB Technical Tests

ICE LEVEL 2 VALIDITY & RENEWAL

Validity
Upon successful completion of the appropriate ICE Technical Tests a candidate will receive
an ICE card, which will be valid for 3 years

Renewal
The ICE renewal process assures a candidate’s knowledge, skills and ability are maintained
in line with evolving processes and technical requirements. The renewal process requires
each candidate already holding an ICE card to successfully complete a knowledge only test
after 3 years. The test must be taken no sooner than 3 months prior to the expiry date
on the card and no later than 3 months after the date. Failure to complete the test within
this 6 month window will render the ICE card invalid and necessitate full completion
once more of all tests.

PIPEFITTING SKILL SPECIFIC TECHNICAL TESTS (LEVEL 2)

TIPF 01 Setting Out Pipework and Marking Out

The test assesses if a candidate can set out and mark pipework configurations using
marking out and measuring equipment for the fabrication of a mitre bend, produce a
template for marking out a lateral branch and mark out branch and header pipes as per the
drawing

TIPF 03 Preparing Pipe Ends using Portable Edge Preparation Machines

The test assesses if a candidate can use portable preparation machines to prepare pipe
ends for welding, chamfering the pipe end to a specified angle and within set dimensions

TIPF 11 Preparing and Assembling Screwed Pipework

The test assesses if a candidate can use the appropriate tools and equipment to fabricate
and assemble a steel pipe section with screwed fittings and flanges to a specified drawing
and within set tolerances

ICE APPRENTICESHIPS - PIPEFITTING

To achieve an ICE Apprenticeship in Pipefitting either at Level 2 or Level 3, two more Skill
Specific Technical Tests (Level 2) must be completed in addition to the minimum two
Pipefitting Skill Specific Technical Tests (Level 2) and two Skill Specific Technical Tests
(Level 2). This brings the total requirement to six Level 2 Technical Tests.

A full list of all other Skill Specific Technical Tests (Level 2) is included below.
