SECTION III: WRITING (30 MARKS)

Below are two reports on virtual reality (VR) headsets for gaming consoles.
Based on the details given in the report, provide conclusions and give your
recommendation based on the conclusions that you have made.

Please write your answer in the ANSWER BOOKLET.

Headset 1: HTC Vive VR

If you want to invest in a high-end

virtual reality (VR) headset, you should
consider the HTC Vive VR headset.
Headset 1 is one of the most
purchased VR headsets on the market
since model combine the powerful
hardware with the sleek construction
which by default means you can game
and watch your favourite movies with
style. Its matte, dark grey silver finish which adds even more beauty to its
appearance

Headset 1 is a real beast. From the moment you take this unit out of the box, your
VR experience can start right away. Users can use this product while sitting or
standing the space as large as 110 degree field of view measured diagonally. This
causes the virtual reality world to feel as if it truly wraps around your head. Headset 1
is equipped with a front-facing camera which foster room scale VR within a 15 x 15
space by casting a blue outline on walls and objects established by the sensors.

Headset 1 has 37 visible sensors and it is noticeably larger. It is technically heavy at

around 555g without headphones included. That bigger size and weight does have
advantages; a lens distance know moves the Vive lenses further and closer to your
face. This is extra helpful for people who wear glasses. You will be heavily impressed
by the headset headband which runs from the top and the sides, due to the fact that
it is sturdy. Once you start wearing this headband, the chance it will move even
slightly is minimal. Besides, you can also connect Headset 1 to your phone via
Bluetooth for answering calls and messages.

Headset 1 comes with a pair of controllers that look like a unique pair of waggle
wands. Though they look odd, wielding these wands virtually put your hands in the
game. They really give the impression that you are gripping onto or holding
something significant, such as holding a gun or a specific tool in virtual reality.

Headset 1 offers around fifty window games which can be played by PC including
bundled games such as Job Simulator, Fantastic Contraption, Fallout 4, Doom and
Skyrim, PSace Pirate Trainer and Tilt Brush. Moreover, Headset 1 is also equipped
with the native Steam support that allows gamers to engrossed themselves with the
virtual reality gameplay. Nevertheless, its game lineup is undeniably not as striking
as the core gaming experiences of other brands.

There are a few sets of system requirements to look at when you are considering the
HTC Vive. To properly run the HTC Vive, it requires a Window PC with graphical
specs of an Nvdia GTX 970 AMD Radeon RX 480 graphics card at aminimum which
can cost around $200.00. Its other requirements include Intel Core i5-4590 or an
AMD FX-8350 or greater, and 4GB of RAM. Headset 1 only needs one USB port and
wants either an HDMI 1.4 or DisplayPort 1.2 or better. It will soon be supported on
Mac. Due to Metal 2 optimization done by Apple, the SteamVR SDK will soon be
supported in addition to Unity and Unreal, two of the most commonly used VR
engines.

HTC Vive Headset is particularly expensive, with the price set at $599.00.
Nevertheless, it is a futuristic-looking headset with a front-facing camera, room-scale
VR and two controllers bundled with the order.

Key features:

 110-degree field of view.

 Controller- Vive controller, any PC compatible gamepad.

 Sensors – Accelerometer, gyroscope, Lighthouse laser tracking system, front-

facing camera.

 Requirements: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970/ AMD Radeon RX 480

Headset 2: Oculus Rift VR

If you want to have a real, jaw-dropping

gaming experience, Headset 2 would be a
good choice. The Oculus Rift is an honest
wireless VR headset, or, as Oculus
describes itself as an “all-in-one VR
device”. Headset 2 has a plain black
rectangular lightweight body that is followed
by the rounded edges the strap that extend
from the top of the visor over the top of your head in a padded triangle at the rear
which will ensure that you will have the most comfortable experience while wearing
this headset. With cameras built in into the device, users can enjoy a fully 360-
degree VR experience without the needs for any cables.

Headset 2 does not have a camera on the front of its headset for augmented reality
vision, but you can buy a $79 sensor that enables room-scale VR comparable to that
of the HTC Vive. This headset is a bit more refined looking with a compact design
that amounts to a big, black brick sitting against your face. Oculus is 470g by
comparison and throws in headphones. Thanks to its wonderful construction, you will
not have any troubles wearing glasses while using the headset, however, it may feel
a bit tighter.

In terms of controllers, Headset 2 controllers come with a hand-confirming, half-moon

shape at a conscious price tag of $199. Though it still ships with a normal Xbox One
gamepad, the optional addition of the Touch controllers gives Headset 2 the
advantage of customer choice.

There are 30 Oculus Rift games, and more to be arrived by 2018. Some of the best
pack-in games include: Lucky’s Tale (a mascot 3D platforming game in the style of a
classic Rare game), Eve: Valkyrie (a spaceship dogfighting shooter game taking full
advantage of VR's 360-degree view), Chronos (an RPG), Radial-G: Racing Revolved
(futuristic racer), Pinball FX2 VR (a pinball game) and Star Trek: Bridge Crew from
Ubisoft and probably even Resident Evil 7 after its 12-month exclusivity deal with
PlayStation.

The system requirements for Oculus Rift include: an Nvidia GTX 960, Intel Core i3-
6100 or AMD FX-4350 minimum and 8GB of RAM. The set up process is actually
very easy due to the fact that this headset connects to your PC directly through its
lengthy cable that splits of at the end into HDMI and USB 3.0 connector so you can
start using it within less than 10 minutes without any problem. However, we
recommend that you make sure your PC meets the Oculus minimum or
recommended system specs.

Oculus Rift costs $399, which means you are getting a powerful virtual reality
headset for a price cheaper than the HTC Vive. That's a big plus, even though it has
a more stringent processor and video output requirements compared to the HTC
Vive.

Key features:

 360-degree field of view

 Controller – Oculus Touch, Xbox One controller
 Sensors – Accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, Constellation tracking
camera
 Requirements – NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 / AMD Radeon RX 470 or
greater; Intel Core i3-6100 / AMD FX4350 or greater; 8GB+ of RAM; 2x USB
3.0 ports
 Price – $399
