Bifilar Suspension
Bifilar Suspension
OBJECTIVE:
To determine the moment of inertia of an irregular shaped object using Bifilar Suspension.
INTRODUCTION:
A bifilar suspension is a device which can be used to measure the mass moment of inertia of
an object which may have irregular shape or difficult to analyze by a mathematical method. It
consists of two parallel wires of length L suspended symmetrically as shown in Figure and
the object is placed on the mass center G of the platform. The system is given a small angular
displacement through a vertical axis and the period of oscillation is measured.
THEORY:
Bifilar Suspension
APPARATUS SETUP:
Required components
1. Pendulum cross beam
2. Measuring tape
3. Bifilar suspension accessories.
Flat bar 25 x 510 with two wire attachment.
Two round weight, mass 1800 g (approx.)
A rectangular bar suspended by fine wires secured by two chucks and the length of
the wires can be varied by pulling them through the chucks and tighten the chucks.
Two masses to be pegged on the bar symmetrically through the drilled holes at equal
intervals.
