Introduction 2

Your Physiolaser olympic

Thank you for choosing the Physiolaser olympic – the latest-generation, high-quality laser
device from Reimers & Janssen GmbH.

Reimers & Janssen has been designing and manufacturing medical devices for laser therapy
since 1982. Our experience and innovations have made us one of Europe's leading manufac-
turers in the industry. We have applied our profound knowledge of complimentary therapy
methods to this product as well, which lets you achieve the best results for your patients
with gentle laser therapy across a large range of applications.

The Physiolaser olympic consists of a base device with a microprocessor that can control all
laser probes available from Reimers & Janssen. The Physiolaser is thus the basis of our pio-
neering concept: universal usability combined with ease of use.

With the powerful Physiolaser olympic, you will always have the latest therapy programs
at your disposal, whether you are using surface probes, single probes, or laser needles. The
Physiolaser even lets you use two probes at the same time.

With the easy-to-use touchscreen and the built-in basic therapy set, you can immediately
proceed with treatment. Every program can be easily adapted to your individual therapy
needs. Furthermore, you can purchase special therapy sets and easily install them into your
Physiolaser.

Thus, the Physiolaser olympic is suitable for a wide range of treatments in dermatol-
ogy, rheumatology, orthopedics, physiotherapy, sports and veterinary medicine as well as
dentistry.

The Physiolaser is compact, portable, and can be used without an external power supply.
With its powerful rechargeable battery, it is also ideal for mobile use outside the office, for
laser applications in sports medicine, physiotherapy, and veterinary medicine.

The Physiolaser has a built-in SD card slot so it can be updated at any time and expanded
for future laser probes. With your Physiolaser olympic, you are prepared for the future of
gentle laser therapy.

Safety information 3

General information
Read these operating instructions thoroughly before operating the device. The Physiolaser
olympic is a control unit that can be operated in combination with laser probes. Therefore,
please also read the operating instructions for all probes that you intend to connect to your
Physiolaser olympic.

These operating instructions describe the proper use of the Physiolaser olympic and indi-
cate hazards associated with its use. All individuals who use, care for, service, or supervise
this device must read and follow the instructions. These operating instructions must always
be kept with the device and must be included with the Physiolaser olympic if given to others.

Liability disclaimer
You may use the Physiolaser olympic only for the purposes described in these operating
instructions and only under supervision. The manufacturer is not liable for the device and
the consequences resulting from operation or applications that are not described within
these operating instructions. The manufacturer reserves the right to make changes based on
technological improvements.

The Physiolaser olympic may only be operated with the power supply indicated in the
technical data and the probes manufactured by Reimers & Janssen GmbH and accessories
approved by Reimers & Janssen GmbH. The built-in SD card reader cannot be used with an
adapter. Never open the device even to replace a battery. Any Repair and maintenance work
may only be performed by Reimers & Janssen GmbH or a company authorized by Reimers
& Janssen GmbH.

Before starting therapy with the Physiolaser, make sure that the patient is not connected at
the same time to any other electrically operated device.

Functions and safety standards

The Physiolaser olympic conforms to the following international safety standards:
• IEC 60601-1 - Safety of medical electrical devices
• IEC 60601-1-2 - Electromagnetic compatibility
• IEC 60601-1-6 - Usability
• IEC 60601-2-22 - Safety of diagnostic and therapeutic laser devices
• IEC 60825-1 - Safety of laser products

6
Personnel
The operator of this device must comply with the applicable national and international regu-
lations for the operation of a Class 3B laser (e.g. IEC 60601-2-22 and IEC 60825-1, CAN/
CSA Z386-92). Any person who uses the device must be instructed in the handling of the
device and the dangers associated with laser radiation.

The low level laser should be used in therapy as stated for its intended use for medical and
healthcare clinics. The laser may be operated by professionals and trained personnels such
as physiotherapists, acupunctrists, therapists and nurses in healthcare with medical supervi-
sion and independently after they had been trained.

Treatment area
Operate the laser only indoors. The room in which laser therapy is performed must meet
the requirements of national accident prevention regulations. All entrances must display a
laser warning sign in compliance with IEC 60825-1. Reflective objects, mirrors and chrome
surfaces must be removed. Children may enter the room only as patients and must be under
constant supervision.

Prevent unauthorized use

Your Physiolaser olympic is equipped with a safety key to prevent unauthorized use. The
laser can be operated only with the key inserted.
When the laser is not in use, the key should always be removed and stored separate from
the unit in order to prevent unauthorized use.

Emergency shutdown
Press the red "Emergency Stop" button in firmly, turn the safety key to "off", and remove the
remote control plug on the backside of the housing.

Press the "Emergency Stop" button to shut off the laser quickly in case of emergency.
Press the button in firmly until the stop. To release the button, turn it gently to the
left or right until the button springs several millimeters upward to the stand-by
position.

7
Radiation injuries
Avoid direct or scattered radiation to the eyes. Do not look directly into the laser radiation
output area, since visible and invisible laser radiation can cause injury to the eye. Honeywell
3199-21174RJ laser protective eyewear conforming to the European standard EN 207 must
always be worn within the treatment room during treatment. Exercise caution when per-
forming therapy on the head region!

If you are performing extended treatments or using a high energy output, adjust the dosage
to the specific skin types treated to prevent the risk of burns. Note that the pigmentation of
a patient’s skin can change over multiple treatments.

When treating patients with darkly pigmented skin, birthmarks, tattoos, etc. be aware
of the risk of burning because melanin or color in the skin tissue absorbs the light. In
this case, reduce the power or energy output.

Risk of burns
The probe tip may become very hot at high power output and an extended treatment time.
In this case, avoid direct skin contact by using a cap or applicator. Otherwise, burns may oc-
cur. Alternately, reduce the power output and/or treatment time. Therefore, please read the
operating instructions for your probe as well.

Risk of infection
While performing therapy, keep the probe approx. 1 cm from the skin to avoid direct con-
tact with damaged skin and prevent bacterial contamination.

After each treatment, disinfect your probe as described in the operating instructions for
your probe. If you use an applicator, disinfect the applicator after each treatment in order to
minimize the risk of patient infection.

Decommissioning in the event of a hazard

If you believe that the device can no longer be operated safely, it should be decom-
missioned to prevent against further use and to send it to the distributor for repair.
Such cases include:
• the power adapter, housing components, or the probe cable have visible damage
• the device no longer functions properly
• the device has been stored or transported for a long period under adverse
conditions
• the display fails or is illegible.

Checking for transport damage

Inspect your Physiolaser for damage that may have occurred during transport, i.e., whether
the housing components or the probe cable have visible damage. If you discover any damage,
do not operate your probe. Instead, contact your distributor.

Positioning the unit

Select a stable, level surface or table and turn the feet to the front. Connect the device to
the mains current via the power adapter.

Temporarily disengaging safety lock

On the back of your Physiolaser olympic, please check that the "Remote control plug" sock-
et is sealed with a plug. If it is not, please insert the supplied connecting plug for door switch
fuse into this socket. This temporarily disengages the safety lock so that you can restore
your device's functionality without a connection to a door switch.

To improve the safety, the operator is obligated to connect a door switch to the
Physiolaser olympic. Such a system will automatically shut off the laser in case
the door of the treatment room is opened during therapy. Have the cable to the
door switch attached properly to the remote control plug on the backside of your
Physiolaser.

11
Connecting probes
If you have purchased your Physiolaser along with a new probe, please read the accompany-
ing operating instructions. Activate your probe accordingly, and connect it with the appropri-
ate probe cable to one of the laser sockets on your Physiolaser. You can connect another
probe to the other socket accordingly.

Setup Set 3
With the open software architecture of
your Physiolaser olympic, you can always
work with the therapy programs that are
best suited for your applications and which
are based on cutting-edge research.

In the “Set 3” screen, you can select and

grams for your particular configuration
from your distributor. Please inquire
about the latest developments with
your distributor.

Activating therapy sets

You can of course also use multiple program
sets at the same time. In “Set 3,” all the
therapy sets available on your Physiolaser
are indicated, from which you can select or
deselect for the given situation.

In this example, only the “Therapy Base” set

is activated. If you wish to add additional
sets, these will be carried over into the
therapy selection screen.

28
Saving therapy sets
Your Physiolaser gives you the option of
saving complete therapy sets on a SD card
or transferring them from a SD card to
the control unit. This may be important, for
example, if you have customized your pro-
grams and do not want to lose these modifi-
cations during a software update.

Please note that existing therapy sets

during saving and restoring.

It is best to use an extra SD card without

program software and insert this into your
Physiolaser as described on page 27.

Then select “Therapy sets – save” and select

the sets that you wish to save. As soon as
you press “save,” the selected sets are auto-
matically saved to the SD card.

Restoring therapy sets

If you want to restore sets onto your con-
trol unit, select "Therapy sets - restore".
Sets available on the SD card will be shown.
Activate the sets that you wish to install and
then press “restore”. The selected sets will
now be installed automatically.

Pressing “restore” loads the selected

therapy set from the SD card onto the
Physiolaser.

Recharging the battery
You can easily recharge the battery of your
Physiolaser olympic using the power adapter
supplied with your device. As soon as the
charge status indicator is green again, you
can continue to work right away, even as the
recharging continues.

The Physiolaser recharging procedure is

monitored by a microcomputer, so there is
no danger of overcharging. In addition, the
rechargeable battery has no memory effect, This message appears if you begin a therapy

connected to the adapter.

You can extend the operating time in

battery mode by setting the screen-
saver to activate sooner (see page 26).

Use only the supplied power adapt-

er for power supply and battery
recharging.

The orange bars show the recharging

process.

Error messages 10

Restart after error message

Your Physiolaser olympic uses a sophisticat-
ed and stable software design so that error
messages should occur only very rarely.

In some circumstances an error can be cor-

rected by a simple restart.

If the error message reappears, please con-

tact your distributor.

Confirm the message with “OK” and turn

off your Physiolaser. Wait a moment and
then turn the device back on.

Safety lock open

If the remote control plug has loosened or
is unplugged, a corresponding error message
will appear and all probes will be disabled.

In order to continue working, you must

reinsert the plug.

32
Defective battery
Your Physiolaser software is able to dis-
tinguish between an empty and a defective
battery.

A defective battery is indicated with an er-

ror message and operating the device in
battery mode is no longer possible.

In order to continue working temporar-

ily, you must connect your device to mains
current. Please contact your distributor if you have a
defective battery.

Critical errors
If the error messages about critical system
errors appear, please turn off the device and
contact your distributor.

If repair work is required, your dis-

tributor can provide you with a re-
placement device if necessary.

Critical error: Please disconnect all

laser probes and turn off the device.
