Quiz 1 - Transport Phenomena

This quiz covers topics in fluid statics and elementary fluid dynamics from weeks 1 and 2 of the Transport Phenomena course. It contains 3 questions testing knowledge of [1] fluid rheology and viscosity from results of a rheometer test, [2] fluid statics principles to determine bottom hole pressure from well properties, and [3] using the Bernoulli equation to calculate manometer reading and pressure changes in an automotive wind tunnel test section. The quiz is closed book, lasts 30 minutes, and uses 3 decimal places in final answers which must be underlined.

Quiz #1

Type : Announced, Closed Book

Class : PE2203 – Transport Phenomena 2018
Topics : (Week 1 and 2) Fluid Statics and Elementary Fluid Dynamic (Bernoulli)
Date : 31 January 2020
Duration : 30 minutes
Notes : Unless otherwise stated, use 3 decimal places. Please underline your final answer.

1. (Newtonian’s Law of Viscosity) The results of rheometer test for 4 (four) different fluids (Fluid a, b, c, and d) are given
in Fig. 1a below.
a. Based on rheological behavior, determine fluid type of each fluids. (Points: 5)
b. Estimate fluid viscosity at various shear rate for all 4 (four) fluids and plot in “Viscosity vs Shear Rate” graph
provided in Fig. 1b below. (Points: 10)

Fig. 1a Fig. 1b

2. (Unit conversions and Fluid Statics) An oil well with depth of 3500 ft is producing oil with density 39.6 °API. During
shut-in period, the wellhead pressure reading is stabilized at 1200 psig. Draw pressure profile along the wellbore
(Pressure vs Depth) and determine static bottom hole pressure (in psig). (Points: 15)

3. (Fluid Statics and Elementary Fluid Dynamics – Bernoulli Equation) Air is drawn into a wind tunnel used for testing
automobiles as shown in figure below.

a. Determine the manometer reading, h (inch), when

the velocity in the test section is 60 mph. Note that
there is a 1-in. column of oil on the water in the
manometer. (Points: 40)
b. Determine the difference between the stagnation
pressure on the front of the auto mobile and the
pressure in the test section (psi). (Points: 20)
